From Iyabo Lawal, Ibadan

THERE was tension yesterday at the University of Ibadan (UI), Ibadan Oyo State as Muslim students protested the demolition of their mosque by the school authority.

The students alleged that the demolition of their place of worship was done without their knowledge.

In protest the demolition, the students went on rampage and locked the entrance gates to the university, thus preventing human and vehicular movement to and from the campus.

The action created a traffic snarl on the campus' major highway as motorists made U-turns to take alternative routes while pedestrians, including students who have papers to write in the on-going first semester examinations, scaled the wall fence.

One of the student leaders who spoke on condition of anonymity blamed the university management for the crisis, saying their failure to carry the Muslim students along was responsible for the demonstration.

He explained that the mosque was built with the students' money and wondered why management would unilaterally raze it without consulting them.

But the university's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole, denied the claim that the Muslim students were not contacted before the demolition was carried out, saying the management met with their leaders to inform them of the plan.

He explained that the demolition was part of the university's drive to preserve the original master plan of the campus by ridding it of illegal structures.

Adewole assured the Muslim students that the institution would build an alternative place for them.

He said: "I met them this morning, we have agreed to meet again on Sunday to identify an alternative place. So, I can't understand why they should go and lock the gates."

you must understand that these people always think of themselves and their religion alone,
they are always self centered. if Christians that lost valuables life's and properties, and also have their places of worship burn't to the ground (churches) in the northern parts of the country did not protest, but rather pray for the forgiveness of the culprits.

i wonder why the muslims can't behave them selves properly like civilized people's

Are Christians not self centered?

Interesting! In some people's jaundiced view, there is virtually no difference between a mob action and the action taken by a constituted authority. If a mob can kill people and destroy properties, then a constituted authority is equally free to commit the same aggression and the aggrieved must remain silent because the folks who were on the receiving end of the mob action never protested. What a lopsided reasoning.
So it is now an offense to stage peaceful protest (nobody has said the protest was riotous) to demonstrate against the authorities for a wrongful action? Isn't it a mark of civil behavior to go on peaceful protest for the injustice (as opposed to rioting) that has been done to the protesting party? And if the Christians refused to protest for reasons best known to them must the Muslims follow suit and just fold their arms and watch their rights being trampled upon? These are just food for thought for you.

What is peaceful about forcefully locking the gates

It was not a wrongful action because the Mosque was illegal.
