Biden signs order directing review of foreign apps, undoing Trump's TikTok ban


President Biden has signed a new executive order directing a review of data collection by foreign-owned apps, in the process undoing three executive orders from former President Trump targeting Chinese apps.

With one order, Trump had sought to ban American businesses from transacting with TikTok (BDNCE) and WeChat (TCEHY -0.5%). Another order looked to ban TikTok outright, a move that kicked off a saga over selling it to an American business. That push fizzled toward the end of Trump's presidency.

Now the Commerce Dept. is directed to review apps linked to foreign adversaries, and the new order clarifies levels of risk in dealing with foreign-owned apps.

It's also directing Commerce to work with other agencies on recommendations to protect U.S. consumer data from adversaries.
