Hives or Urticaria are red dots that appear anywhere on the body. These itchy raised welts on the skin interfere with everyday activities. They generally occur due to allergic reactions to an irritant or certain food. Blanching and raised itchy red or skin-colored bumps on the skin are some symptoms of hives.

What are the Types of Hives?

It has been witnessed that around 20% of people get hives treatment at least once in their lifetime. There are mainly three types of hives, including:

Acute: This is the case when hives stay for less than six weeks. Since it is an acute problem, it goes away with itself or with the help of allergy medication. It usually happens due to an allergic reaction to food or medication.

Chronic: In case hives stay for a prolonged period of time, it is considered chronic. Therefore, it becomes imperative to visit a medical expert or dermatologist. Unfortunately, in 95% of cases, people fail to determine the exact cause of chronic hives.

Physical: Many times, people develop hives when due to overexposure to cold or hot temperatures. These hives pop up on the skin within an hour after the exposure.

What are the Causes of Hives?
Every time an allergic reaction occurs in the body, it releases histamine into the blood to fight against infection and other outside intruders. Fluid accumulation in the skin leads to rashes. Angioedema is the medical term used for the swelling of the skin due to hives.

Though many potential triggers can cause hives, finding the actual cause becomes a challenging task many times. Here is a compiled list of things that cause hives-

Foods including shellfish, nuts, eggs, and peanuts.
Animal dander from dogs, cats, horses, and many more.
Insect bites or stings.
Physical stimulation due to exposure to hot or cold temperatures.
Pollen.
Certain medications, especially antibiotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Blood transfusions.
Latex.
Stress.
Tight clothes.
Viral and bacterial infections.
Scratching.
Exercise.
Some plants, such as poison oak, poison ivy, and nettles.

The Endnote
People dealing with hives are generally suggested to use a cold compress, take a bath with an anti-itch solution, and avoid irritants because these remedies help in soothing the skin and reducing inflammation. However, in case of hives stay for more than six weeks, getting the help of a dermatologist becomes quintessential.
