The was an American television show which originally aired on ABC on Mondays evening from January to May of 1971. It was hosted by Jack Barry. The show was a spin off of the popular game show Deal or No Deal, which had been in place since early 1960s. In the first few episodes of the Reel Game, Jack Barry would choose one contestant per week and the show would end with a short skit featuring the eliminated player.

The concept was simple enough as they would have the guests answer questions then the show would reveal who the winner was. If they didn't answer correctly they would lose that round. The show was not very popular and ABC only lasted for six episodes. Since its cancellation many different remakes have come out including movies and spinoffs. Today it is one of the highest rated shows on television.

The Reel Game follows the lives of six different "Reel Sports" competitors. The first season showcased sports which were not too popular like football. For the second season, sports which were a bit more popular like track and field, wrestling and baseball. This show became popular in the United States as a spin-off of the equally popular Wheel of Fortune game. For the next three seasons, the show revolved around items relating to current events.

When it first premiered, the Reel Game focused on commercialism rather than entertainment. The writers and producers had to constantly defend their shows against claims that they were nothing more than puff shows. They often came under fire by claiming that there were several million viewers and that audience response counted towards winning picks. In recent times the show has branched out into reality shows like Survivor and Flavor of Love.

The Reel Game has featured some of Hollywood's best actors and actresses. favourites like Dan Aykroyd, Glen Campbell, and David Strathairn have all appeared on one episode of Reel Game. These actors try to win the game for cash and get away with it. This is actually quite fun to watch. Unfortunately for the contestants who are not so gifted, they often end up getting locked in a room with other "reel rats" and are left to their own devices to come out of the game alive.

I'm not sure why Reel Poker has never been given an American TV series. It would be a great opportunity for a network to showcase this fantastic game and give it the exposure that it deserves! A lot of American TV stations wouldn't dare go against the big boys like FX and Disney because of their big budget. Maybe they would just have to adapt a little bit of Reel Poker to make it unique.
