HISTORY:
Our present chicken originate from the Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus gallus), Domestic ducks descended
from the Anas platyrhychos, and the Turkeys originated in Central and North America. Early poultry
production consisted of many households having backyard flocks of dual-purpose chickens. These
chickens supplied eggs and an occasional chicken for sacrifices, Sunday or holiday celebrations.

For over four thousand years, the poultry industry has evolved into being the strongest arm of
Agriculture. Today, large industries have emerged from these feathered animals making them the
largest supplier of animal protein.
In Nigeria it contributes about 25% of the Agricultural GDP and one of the Highest employer of
labour.
It is also on record that poultry has one of the highest return on investment and one of the fastest
growing industry in Nigeria.

1.2. What is Poultry?
Poultry farming is the raising of birds such as chickens, ducks, turkeys, quails and geese for the
purpose of producing meat or eggs for food. It also involves the production of feathers, skin and
manure as bi product.

Poultry meat and eggs are the most consumed animal protein; unrestricted by any religion or culture
in Nigeria. It is recorded that the poultry industry contributes about 25% of the country’s Agricultural
GDP in Nigeria.
2.0. Poultry as Business
The value chain involve in poultry production are enormous and one can key into any angle and
become gainfully employed. According to the Global poultry trend, it seems poultry expands in
Africa by 3.2% against global figure of 2.2%. Egg production in Africa was targeted to reach 3 million
ton per year by last year, 2015 and Nigeria is leading on the expansion with South Africa, both
expanding at 4% annual increase (FAO).
Nigeria poultry potential is expanded beyond her borders. The Nigerian farms already supply beyond
our domestic market. Countries like Tchad, Niger, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Central African
Republic, Gabon, Togo, Benin Republic as well as Sao Tome and Principle are our market to fill. Some
of them presently depend on our meagre supply.
2.1 Egg production.

Nigeria presently produces about 650,000 tons of eggs according to FAO. A parallel record from
Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), indicates that Nigeria produces presently above 1.25million
tons of egg per year about 10.3 billion eggs per year. China stand tall here at 473 Billion shell eggs
per year Mexico at 41. Billion shell eggs per year. Despite, this volume, Nigeria is far from meeting
her domestic demand for poultry products. Egg remains one commodity that is most of the time
scarce.

2.2 Meat (Broiler) Production

USA, in 2011, exported poultry products worth $3.2billion(N576 billion)on broiler alone. A single
corporation, Tyson Food Inc, produced about 100,000tons of poultry meat per week, in order words,
the company produced in three weeks what we produce in a year. Brazil with a population of 192
million is not so much larger than we are, with predominately black population, second only to
Nigeria. Nigerian Capacity presently is about 250 metric tons/annum, USA is at 16.5million
metrictons /year, Brazil at 11.5 million metric tons/year.

2.3. Feed Milling
