Life works by striking a balance between its negative and positive forces. Living things grow by maintaining a balance between its cell system, getting rid of older unuseful cells and replacing them with newer child cells. Firms and organisations grow by collecting both positive and negative feedbacks and acting on them accordingly. Progressive governments develop thier countries by collecting feedback from it’s people and acting on the logical ones.

As an individual, if you must grow and make visible progress in anything you do, you must learn to accept both praises and criticism and filter out the important points they contain.

Praise

Praises tell you that you are doing great. They let you know how much people positively perceive your deeds and how much it means to them. They show you how much you have done, how far you have come and how appreciated you are. They also encourage you to do more and spread your tentacles even wider. Without praises, you wouldn’t know if you are doing good or if people see your efforts at all.

Criticism

Criticism is as important as praises. First, like a child, it whips you for doing badly and points out what you need to do to correct them. If you are doing great, criticism analyses your performance and highlights the great and the grey areas. Another very good thing about being criticised is that it reveals to you that not all the praises you get are good praises, some of them were meant to mislead you. Every good criticism must contain both the problem and the solution.

In whatever you do and in any position you find yourself, accept both praises and criticism. It takes both sun and rain for flowers to blossom. Savour the praises as they come, use the criticism to learn were you are getting it wrong. Fix them and even more praises will come. If everyone around you is praising you or you are not getting criticised at all, it’s either you are being misled or you are doing nothing at all.
