In a virtual meeting with the representatives of the Federal Governmen, the mission of the International Monetary Fund stated that the resurfacing of fuel subsidies was concerning.

The IMF mission led by Jesmin Rahman , according to a press release, expressed its concerns about rising fuel subsidies to the Nigerian authorities during a virtual meeting.

The Fund also stressed the importance of introducing market-based fuel pricing mechanisms and the need to deploy well targeted social support to cushion any impact on the poor.

The mission commended the Central Bank of Nigeria for merging taking the official exchange rate to the NAFEX window.

However, they recommended the unification of all exchange rate windows and establishing a market-clearing exchange rate.

On monetary policy, they advised the country to strengthen the monetary targeting regime and integrating the interbank and debt markets.

Rahman was quoted as saying, “The Nigerian economy has started to gradually recover from the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Gross Domestic Product growth turned positive in the fourth quarter of 2020, and growth reached 0.5 per cent year-on-year in Q1 2021, supported by agriculture and service sectors.

“Nevertheless, the employment level continues to fall dramatically and together with other socioeconomic indicators, is far below pre-pandemic levels. Inflation slowed down in May but remains elevated at 17.9 per cent, owing to high food prices.

“As oil prices and remittance flows recover, the balance of payments has slightly strengthened, although imports are rebounding faster than exports and foreign investment subdued resulting in forex shortage.”

The mission urged the government to keep reliance on CBN overdrafts for deficit financing within legal limits.

This IMF enjoys when the people suffer. I don't see anything wrong if a government choose to subsidise some expenditures for the masses. Imperialist IMF, not like they even care... why is our subsidy disturbing them, please someone should ask IMF. Caring indeed

In the name of Subsidy Removal they increased the price of petrol to what it is now and they still said they are paying subsidy. This government itself is a Yahoo Yahoo government. The youths are suppose to be arresting the government officials for scam and not the reverse cos those guys are trying to survive while the government officials are the Big thieves

Yet the western world subsides families feeding, child care and even pays each person unemployed unemployment benefit.
If Nigerians enjoy 1/10th the subsidies foreign governments give their citizens, the IMF would have labelled our system archaic and the citizens being set-up to be doomed in future.
Here there is no unemployment benefit, there is no child subsidy, there is no subsidy for some agricultural products and certainly no guaranteed food bank.
Rubbish.

when the so called subsidy is removed and fuel sells for 400 naira per liter, I guess that is when it will benefit the poor masses? Poor masses that provide their own electricity via generator, poor masses that pay exorbitant fares to get from pointA to pointB, poor masses that don't receive ridiculous allowances like hardship allowance

There was subsidy in the last government before this one, and fuel was not sold at N400. This government is heavily corrupt. They even want the subsidy they fought against to continue, so they can steal more.

The truth is subsidy or no subsidy, Nigeria's economy is bad. All the GDP index released indicating that we are Africa's Giant do not transcribe to the state of an average Nigerian Man.
We really need capable hands in leadership.

When you borrow money from IMF, you should be ready to dance to their tune regardless of its impact on the security and economy.

a form of neo-colonialism

That is how they go around the world creating problems for countries with ignorant or greedy leadership like ours. At least 50 percent of the G20 countries are welfare states including the US, and they want to come here and tell us how to live our lives?
