Hello,
I came across your forum by searching Audit Command Language in Goggle. I will be glad to give you some information regarding ACL. I have been an ACL Master Trainer for ACL Europe from 2001 to 2005. The title means that I was training and certifying applicants for the official designation of Certified ACL trainer. I am still doing some freelance consulting.
I would love to give free advice to the members of this forum and who knows if enough people are interested I could go to your country to give a training session adapted to your needs.
Regards,
PaulP

Hello,
This is the generic message that I sent to three people interested in ACL.
Hello,

Do you currently have a copy of ACL? If so do you have technical support?

Do you have any specific questions regarding ACL? The most generic concept about the use of a tool such as ACL is that your creativity and your imagination to ask the right questions are the only limits. If you can formulate the question and there is data to support it, then you can do it with ACL.

What do you know so far about ACL?

I guess that the first part would be to evaluate where you are at and where do you want to go, only then will I be able to guide you efficiently.

Check out www.topcaats.com - an add in for Excel that can do almost everything ACL can do, for a fraction of the price. Plus it's so simple to use that you don't even need training - just install and start using - it's that simple!

Enjoy!

Hello,
I have been helping a few members of your site directly by email.
Please do not hesitate to post any questions that you might have regarding ACL. I have helped one of your members who is already doing some interesting uses with ACL.
I have looked at Topcat and it seems to be quite an interesting product. I will download it to have a better look at it.
I am sure that like every good product (which it seems to be) it will have a special clientele. I want to be able to recommend the tool most adapted to the needs of my customers.
Being a layer to the Excel interface, I am wondering about the types of data that it can read, the max size of the data files will be limited to the Excel limits and of course what kind of time performance.
Thanks for posting this information I am looking forward to exploring this tool.
Regards,
Paul Picard

Hi Paul (and others)

I'm glad you've had a quick look at TopCAATs, and I'm sure that you'll like what you see when you download it and have a better look!

The focus with TopCAATs is on simplicity and ease of use. We've designed it to be as simple to use as possible, utilizing simple input forms and simple language. This is also helped by running in the familiar Excel environment, which dramatically reduces the learning curve compared to products such as IDEA and ACL.

We wanted to create a CAATs/data analysis tool that could be used by the masses, on a day to day basis, without requiring substantial training (it is assumed that users understand the audit/accounting process). As a result we have (deliberatley) cut out some of the more complex options and features found in ACL and IDEA, as these are rarely understood, let alone used, and often just confuse the user!

Being based in Excel, it is of course subject to the same limitations as Excel. I.e. in Excel 2003 and previous versions 65k rows, and Excel 2007 just under 1.1m rows. From a data import point of view, Excel has native support for a wide variety of file/data types including ODBC and .CSV. From experience, the vast majority of accounting packages can now export directly to Excel or at least .CSV so data import is rarely an issue. For those "awkward" file types, such as print reports, there are 3rd party products that can import these into Excel. Processing speed is slightly slower than database based products, but not noticably - we're talking seconds not minutes!

My advice to people considering purchasing CAATs software would very much depend on the exact need, but here's how I'd approach it:

Small audit department / Internal audit / accounts department: Download the 30 day TopCAATs trial and have a play - see if it suits your needs. If it does, great, if not you may want to consider looking at ACL/IDEA

Large audit firm/deparment: Consider deploying TopCAATs across the firm, and purchasing 1 or 2 ACL licenses (per department) and invest in training up a couple of specialists. This allows the whole team to have access to data analysis tools, and for those few occassions where users need a little more power than TopCAATs, they can consult the specialists. This approach can cut the cost of CAATs deployment by 80-90% compared to deploying ACL/IDEA to everyone, whilst still allowing the whole department access to complex data analysis

Fraud investigators/data analysis professionals: The chances are that you'll need the power and advanced features of IDEA/ACL, and so an Excel based product probably isn't suitable. However, you may still find TopCAATs useful, so why not download the trial and have a play!

Hope this information helps, and if anyone has any questions about TopCAATs, please feel free to contact me at charlie.walker@reinventdata.com

Best regards

Charlie

Hello all,

I find interesting your postings and reviews on the ideal data analysis software to use for different sizes of organizations.

I want to emphasize that irrespective of the size of the organization, a data analysis and fraud detection tool that meets the following specifications is industry standard, especially considering the fact that all organizations no matter how small plan to grow and expand as the years go by.

1. Ability to read data of whatever size - limitless records
2. Ability to read data of all forms and from differenct platforms and systems, and then collate them into one central unit.
3. Cross-platform compatibility with other applications that would facilitate the overall data analysis cycle e.g. Excel, Word, Acrobat, MS Access, etc.
4. A sophisticated system to allow you read complex report files.
5. Ability to automate the audit process and run independently of user intervention.
6. Create programs that can be compiled into a .exe file and run independent of the data analysis software.
7. A beautiful blend of sophistication, functionality, and user-friendliness in its user interface.
8. A money-back guarantee within 30 days of purchase.
9. Free 1 year support.
10.An indepth training program at the lowest cost possible.
11.Free demo package available that can read only 1000 records and less (useful for small firms)

What software is this? IDEA Data Analysis Software.

For a limited period, my firm is offering a training program in January at a subsidized rate. There are limited seats available. Please indicate your interest and send in your contacts.

ActiveData can be used right alongside ACL and IDEA and is a good way of bridging the divide between those of us who are auditors and those of us who are I.T. experts.

Google "ActiveData For Excel"

Another audit software package which may merit attention is "Web CAAT".  It is open source software and runs either stand alone or on an intranet.  Because it is open source, you can tailor it for specific needs and there is no license cost.  The download is pretty hefty, so a high speed internet connection is required.  There are some tutorial videos on the web site, and all that is required to operate it is a browser.

This audit software includes all the key audit functionality as well as over 100 useful audit program steps.  It can also be used for continuous auditing, if that is of any interest.
