PAPER BAG MARRIAGE?
Paper bag marriage is a pidgin English terms,use to describe a lady that left her parents to be living with a man (i.e., her lover) without their full consent or formal marriage rite. It’s like a marriage on credit or loan marriage. There are several factors that can result to this kind of marriage;
1. Over-crowded family: An overcrowded family can be as a result of poor family planning of the parents resulting to giving birth to many children living in a small apartment, the grown up ones especially the ladies will want to demand for their space and privacy, this is one of the reason they can easily leave their home to be leaving with a guy outside, at this point the parents has lost their grip on them, in most cases you still find these ladies still returning to their parents’ house maybe on the weekends to collect food stuff and gist with rest of the family.
2. Poverty: when the parents does not have the financial capacity to cater of their children, the children tend to find other ways of survival, if it means living with a guy that could support in one way or the other.
3. Parental integrity: there are some parents I have seen that are poor and not well to do,yet instill discipline on their children no matter how grown they have become, they asked their children where are they coming from when they return late or when they buy an expensive cloth or thing, they tend to find out the source from which they could afford such things. But some parents tend to slack in disciplining their children when they are grown, and the children sees it as a window opportunity to misbehave.
4. Giving birth out of wedlock: in the African tradition, it is a shame for a lady to be pregnant in her father’s house and most times in other to protect the integrity of the family, the parents of the lady may send her packing to be with whosoever is responsible for the pregnancy, while some rich parents will just organize an emergency marriage to save their name. In recent times these values have being downplayed, now you see a young girl below 18 years is pregnant and it is her parents that is taking care of her while the guy is either nowhere to be found or denying responsibility.
This is becoming a new normal for quick and cheap marriage in Africa and around the world if not properly checked, some men just have this orientation that once they can impregnate a lady it is automatic marriage, parents are encourages to inculcate discipline on their children, set a good standard for their children to copy. If you are a parent reading this and you are not properly married, encourage your spouse to do the right thing. [Please drop a comment if you can, I really want to get a feedback from you,thanks]
