Is it really a good practice to blind only the colum bases, stand the starter pillars before actually blinding the rest of the trenches as you did here?

Would you prefer we blinded everywhere at the same time??

Blinding is to correct the uneveness of the excavated trench and also to provide cover for the rebars.

In this case we blinded the column bases first because the wall strips do not have any rebars on them and to prevent the iron bender walking over them during placement of the rebars.

So what you are saying is that it's not totally out of place to stand the columns first before proceeding with the strips blinding?

Coming to the rods, I have seen some people use 12mm for the bases and 16mm for the pillars.

How good is that?

I won't say good or bad cos most people just provide rebars without any structural design.

But the size and spacing of the rebars (iron rods) are determined from structural calculations based on the loading on the building.

From the calculated area of steel the structural engineer can recommend 12mm /16mm or any other diameter depending on his/ her choice of rebars at a particular spacing that will sufficiently support the load.

So it's the area of steel gotten ,that determines the size and spacing of the steel. If the area is such that 12mm is okay for the column bases then use 12mm and if 16mm is okay for the columns then it's good as well...

Paving stones are used as pavement for external works.
They are the most suitable pavement in water logged areas. The space between the stones allows water to seep through it and ensure that water retention is reduced to minimum..
They are easy to install , maintain and repair.
They can be reused. They come in various shapes, sizes and colours.

They are referred to as interlocking paving stones because each piece of the paving stone is interlocked with the other piece to prevent movement of one part from the other.

They come mostly in 6mm and 8mm thickness. The 6mm thick is used for walk ways and light vehicular loads while the 8mm are for normal to heavy vehicular loads.

Some people lay nylon before placing the paving stones to prevent plants/ weeds from growing between the space.

Whichever method you choose, make sure the slope/ gradient is such that allow water to flow out of your property with ease and quickly too.

Location: Lagos

We are constructing a mixed development for our client in Lagos.
The building consists of a church auditorium, offices and residential apartments. The cark park is on the ground floor.

The buidling has three floors and a pent with two open well staircases, lift shaft and shear walls. The structureis framed in reinforced concrete slab with beams around the perimeter and within the slab to stiffened the panels as well as transfer loads through the columns and the shear walls to the foundation. The roof beams support the steel trusses.

The foundation type is raft beam and slab.

For this reinforced concrete roof slab and beams, we used a total of about one ton of steel ( Y10&Y12 for the slab and beams, while Y16m bars for the beams).

For your ground to first floor columns ( pillars) please use 16mm bars.

Hmm, what if 12mm is already in the ground foundation of like 3 coaches foundation, is it possible to continue the remaining long pillars with 16mm?

structural design is at the back of the building plan but I think it's bn ignored because am not on ground physically but everybody checking it said the buildings ok so far but I still want to b on more saver side

Yes, it is good and better you continue the columns with 16mm bars.

Please don't ignore the structural drawings unless the building drawings has been completely altered.
