Breaking: Derek Chauvin sentenced to 22.5 years for George Floyd's murder Finally, there is now a closure in the killing of George Floyd by former Minneapolis Police officer, Derek Chauvin. This follows that the officer has now been sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison. Chauvin was convicted in April of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, Fox News reports. It was expected that the judge would hand down a sentence between 20 and 25 years, with a maximum of 40 and an average sentence for similar crimes around 12.5.
