Agricultural productivity has greatly improved due to the global availability of fertilizers and pesticides which are used in increasing crop yield. However, misuse of these products and lack of awareness of the field parameters can decrease productivity and endanger the environmental balance in the cultivation area. Farming is becoming more scientific, with remote sensing, GPS and data analytics all being added to farming equipment. Thousands of farmers are progressively adopting the new equipment to make their farming more precise. Drones have gradually replaced tractors for easy agricultural practices which aid efficiency and production. Farming technology includes remote sensing with data collection on variables like nutrient levels and soil moisture.

Furthermore, Precision farming is a strategic system of managing variations in the field accurately to grow more food using fewer resources and reducing production costs. Following, all aspects of the environment – soil, weather, vegetation, water – vary from place to place. All these factors determine crop growth and farming success. Farmers have always been aware of this, but they lacked the tools to measure, map and manage these variations precisely. Thus, precision farming can make a difference to food production facing the challenge of a rising world population and can help farmers to achieve.

The goal of precision farming is to improve agricultural yield and reduce potential environmental risks, while its importance is as follows:

a. Provide better Farm Records essential for Sale and Succession. The practice of Precision Farming helps to give account of Farm activities which is vital to Farm sustainability and sales liability which is essential to Agricultural development.

b. It Helps in Monitoring Soil and Plant Physicochemical Parameters. By placing sensors (electrical conductivity, nitrates, temperature, evapotranspiration, radiation, leaf and soil moisture, etc.) the optimal conditions for plant growth can be achieved.

c. Provide Better Information for Management Decisions. This farming system gives detailed statistics that helps in making accurate decision about farm management.

d. Helps in Obtaining Timely Data. The application of sensing devices in your fields will allow a continuous monitoring of the chosen parameters and will offer real time data ensuring an updated status of the field and plant parameters at all time.

e. Save Time and Costs. A vital advantage of this practice is that it reduces fertilizer and chemical application costs as well as pollution.

Furthermore, it saves time and energy which could have well expended and exhausted if the farming system wasn’t practiced.

f. Less Labour Requirement. It requires little engagement of manpower as most of its activities are mechanized and automated.

In conclusion, precision farming is an agricultural concept based on observing, measuring and responding to inter and intra-field variability in crops whose goal is to define a decision support system (DSS) for farm management with the aim of optimizing returns on inputs while preserving resources. FarmKonnect Nigeria, one of the leading Agribusiness Companies in Nigeria is among the prominent Agricultural firms that practice Precision farming. Having been the first Agricultural Real Estate Company in Nigeria who aims at contributing immensely to food security and world-class nutrition through the use of modern technologies and methodologies has deemed it fit to make farming activities less costly and more productive. Easy modern and mechanized farming result to quality output which is core in the pursuit of food security, sustainability and production.
