A talented 300 level student of Fine and Applied Arts, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, Miss Chidinma Miracle Solomon, said her inspiration as a visual artist with core competence in Fabrics Collage Art is drawn from the environment.

The budding visual artist made this known today as she narrated her journey to the Department of Fine and Applied Arts of the University, where she has spent three challenging and interesting years.

Speaking to the University Public Relations Officer, Elom Iyke Ubochi at his office, Miss Solomon noted that her journey into Visual Art started in Basic 5 when her mother, Mrs. Onyeka Solomon noticed her extraordinary talents in the use of colours, pencils and fabrics to produce images, and encouraged and supported her to live her dreams. She added that apart from her mother, love for colours and beauty of the African print materials have also played a vital role in her choice of profession.

She maintained that her choice of Visual Art especially Fabric Collage Art was to stand out from the crowd by doing something different from what many other people are doing, and thereby carve a niche for herself in the arts industry.

Continuing, she stated that Fabrics Collage Art involves the use of pieces of African print materials to produce images, adding that though it is very expensive in comparison to other genres of Arts, she delved into it because of her penchant for excellence, professionalism and distinction.

Speaking further, Miss Solomon stated that before she gained admission to study Fine and Applied Arts in the University, she had had some training in the field of Fabrics Collage Art at the St. Martdom Art Gallery, Lagos, where her talent was first honed.

The gifted artist who is making waves because of her art works also lamented that art is not really valued in Nigeria as it is done in the advanced nations of Europe and America, noting that in Nigeria people hardly pay the real value for works of art, and called on government at all levels to support the profession as artists have the capacity to enhance the image of the country in the comity of nations through their works.

Miss Solomon averred that after graduation, she hoped to secure a sponsorship to enable her set up a well-equipped arts studio where she can practise as a full time Artist. She however advised young artists to be focused and keep on practising, stating that ‘’the more you practise, the better you become’’, noting also that “Rome was not built in a day”.
