The first set of students of the MBBS Pogramme, College of Medicine, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State that scaled through the 2nd MB examination is set to commence their clinical training at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki in a month’s time.

This was made known yesterday by the Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. Paul Ezeonu during an on-the-spot assessment of infrastructural facilities at the teaching hospital by the Governing Council of the University, to ascertain the preparedness of the hospital in welcoming the medical students for their clinical training.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Emeka Onwe Ogah led the Pro-Chancellor/Chairman, AE-FUNAI Governing Council, Emeritus Prof. Nimi Briggs and other members to the site where the medical students’ hostel will be constructed and other infrastructural facilities already put in place for the clinical training of the students. Some of the facilities that were visited include a 240 capacity lecture hall, library block and an auditorium. More so, a 65-room hostel opposite the teaching hospital has also been secured by the University for the temporary accommodation of the medical students until the completion of their main hostel to be situated inside the hospital.

Speaking during the facility tour, Dr. Ogah noted that the hospital was ready to support the smooth take-off of clinical training of the MBBS students, adding that since the Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the hospital and the University, the hospital has been working assiduously to ensure a seamless relationship between the two institutions.



He further stressed the preparedness of the hospital for the commencement of the programme, explaining that the hospital is well-equipped for the training of medical students as it has over 200 consultants and 600 bed spaces.

While responding, the Pro-Chancellor/Chairman, Governing Council of the University, Emeritus Prof. Briggs highlighted the importance of medical school in the society, and thanked the management of the teaching hospital for their prompt response.
