What are Smartphones made of? by atheistandproud(m): 9:14am On Jul 03, 2021
Our Smartphones are wonderful devices that are capable of a lot of things. Now whilst this thought does not generally occur to a lot of people, some of you may have wondered, what are the parts of a smartphone? What are they made of?

The truth is many of us normal users, have never seen our phones beyond it’s exterior shell. This as a result means that you may have never seen the parts of a smartphone before.

Smartphone repair technicians on the other probably know the insides of a phone like the back of their hand. This is mostly due to their vocation/job, as they get to see the parts of a smartphone all of the time.

If you have never seen the insides of a phone before then this post is for you.

Parts of a smartphone

Frame and body

The frame is the skeleton or internal framework on which the smartphone is built. It houses of the components of the Smartphone. It can be built with either aluminum (any metal can be used) or plastic. Plastic is the favourite of many manufacturers because it is cheap.

The body of the phone is the external covering that protects the internal components/parts of a smartphone. This could either be plastic or glass. Glass was very popular for a while before plastic returned to challenge it.

Touchscreen/display

The display’s function is to show the graphics, operations, instructions etc. that are being carried out on a phone. Most smartphone displays use either IPS LCD or OLED display technology. Displays are made of glass.

The touchscreen (or digitizer) is a piece plastic or glass that reads and converts your finger touches into instructions that the smartphone can understand.

The touchscreen and the display can either be fused together on newer phones or they can be two separate entities like on older phones.

Printed circuit board (mother board)
The PCB/mother board is one of the most important parts of a smartphone. It is a bluish or greenish board that contains important components such as the System on a Chip (SoC), RAM, Internal storage unit, Power Integrated circuit (IC) etc. The PCB also contains ports where other parts of the phone such as the touchscreen display, cameras, battery, microphones, speakers, earphones etc. are plugged in.

If this board is damaged, one may as well forget about the phone.

Cameras
These are tiny devices that are used for capturing still and moving images.

Battery
This is the main power source of the smartphone. The battery provides the electricity that powers the internal components of the smartphone so as to keep it running. If the battery dies, the smartphone dies.

Speakers
These devices are used to convert audio signals from digital code/form into sounds that the human ears can perceive and understand.

Microphone
This device is used to catch or receive audio signals in the environment, and convert them into digital signals.

Vibrator(s)
Vibrator are capable of intense movement. They are mostly used for notifications, calls etc. to notify the user of incoming/missed calls or messages.
