Upgrade your hardware

Because a computer is a machine, its performance will always be governed by its configuration. Ensure that you have an adequate amount of RAM, which is the warehouse of your PC. If your system is old or has minimal RAM, it is prudent that you invest in a RAM upgrade.

Update your drivers, software and operating system

You can improve your system's performance substantially by regularly updating your drivers, software, and operating system with the latest patches, hotfixes, and security updates that are constantly released by the manufacturers of these products.

Partition your hard disk

If you have not already done this, we recommend you partition your hard disk. The idea is to have enough space in the drive in which your operating system is stored. Keep your operating system and applications in different drives. This not only helps in maintaining good PC performance, but it also helps in keeping your data secure from application failures.

Remove unneeded files from your hard disk

We recommend that you run the Disk Cleanup utility at least once a week to get rid of the unwanted files from your hard disk. This will free up important space on your hard disk and improve your system's efficiency. To use this built-in utility, go to Start | All Programs | System Tools | Disk Cleanup.

Defrag your hard drive

To improve the efficiency of your computer, run the Disk Defragmenter tool regularly. Run this tool to ensure that data is stored on your hard disk in a structured manner. When information is stored in a structured way the file retrieval time is reduced, and as a result your system's speed is increased.
