The Creative Industry Group, CIG has waded into the ongoing rift between the Performing Musicians’ Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN), and the Red Chamber of the House of Assembly over the decision of the latter to re-enact the 2004 Copyright Act
PMAN in a press release made available to the media, kicked against the speed and secrecy shrouding the repeal and re-enactment of the Copyright Act 2004.
The PMAN’s president, Pretty Okafor, stated that the process to repeal the Act and re-enact a new one without consulting notable groups and associations in the creative industry had confounded all expectations.
Spokesperson of CIG, Nosa Omoregie in his statement, said that the decision of the legislature to carry out such an inimical act is a deliberate attempt to silence all forms of labour union and movement in the country. He also urged all concerned stakeholders in the creative industry not to fold their arms in this open robbery by the power that be.
He said:
The Creative Industry Group, received the news of the decision of the legislature to repeal the 2004 Act and re-enact a new one without duly involving the key people concerned, with shock.
It is an aberration to even think that the law-making cabals who are supposed to understand the ingredients of democracy are the same people who are abusing them.
We will like to state categorically that the CIG as a mouthpiece of every creative mind in Nigeria will not accept or negotiate any law or Act that bothers on the affair of the industry without having them take part in the process.
Our fate and destiny will not be decided by those who have no idea of what our industry is about.
We dare say it is an affront and assault to the collective intelligence of every content creator in the industry and we will not be silent about it
Nosa urged Nigerians to be calm and wait for the response of the Nigerian legislature to these grave accusations before the next step will be decided..
