Juju scare : Enugu gov shuns Govt Lodge 15/7/2007

More than one month after his swearing in, Governor Sullivan Chime is yet to occupy the Government House, Enugu popularly called the Lion Building.

The common belief is that some "high-powered juju" might have been buried and kept in several places within and outside the lodge which is the usual abode of the number one citizen since the days of the legendary Michael Okpara. Chime thus becomes the second governor who refused to occupy the lodge immediately after their election for alleged juju scare.

The first was Chief Christian Onoh in 1983. "His Excellency avoids the place like a plague and fears it like a snake," an insider told our correspondent in Enugu.

Sources told the Nation that he has been seriously warned never to pass a night in the lodge since there is no guarantee that the "high-powered juju" said to have been put there by "some patrons of native doctors and cultists in" the past regime would leave him unharmed.

While he now temporarily resides at the old Government lodge where he carries out the official daily duties spiritual and structural work is ongoing at the Lion Building.

At a recent post-inaugural inter-denominational thanksgiving service, held on behalf of Chime and his Deputy, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi, organized by the state branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma, pointed severally at the Government House, stressing that the place needed prayer more than any other thing.

"After praying today for you and your Deputy, the next place to go is the Government House," which ought to be a sacred place, although seen now by most citizens as a profaned edifice. "That House there. That house there. This Government House needs a lot of prayers and cleansing," said Chukwuma. .

Even though a powerful Rev. Father, who was consulted went there and did a serious prayer session, during which he "cast and tied and bound evil", Chime was still not convinced that all is well, according to our source.

Our correspondent was informed that for now no date or time has been scheduled for the l prayer session which is being proposed for the total and final cleansing of the Enugu Government House.
