As the nomination of Lauretta Onochie continues to be debated in the Nigerian political sphere, here are other appointments President Muhammadu Buhari made that sent tongues wagging.

President Buhari insisted on appointing these individuals into public offices despite strong public outcry and reservations about their persons.

1. Lauretta Onochie

The most recent of these is the nomination of Lauretta Onochie, one of his personal aides on social media. Buhari nominated Lauretta Onochie as a Federal Commissioner for the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).

This nomination has drawn a lot of bad blood amongst many Nigerians who argue that Onochie should not occupy a position in INEC because she is a member of the APC.

Recently, the PDP held a rally to protest the nomination of Onochie as an INEC commissioner. The party argued that Onochie will not be unbiased in her job as an electoral umpire.

However, despite the cries, President Buhari insists on the nomination of Lauretta Onochie.

As it stands, Onochie has denied being a member of the APC. She told the Senate during her screening that she stopped being partisan in 2019, but news, views, reports and rumours on social media say this is untrue.

As the debate on Onochie continues to heat up, let us look at other nominations and appointments of President Buhari that were against public opinion.

2. Ibrahim Magu

Ibrahim Magu assumed took charge of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in November 2015. When his tenure expired, President Buhari nominated him again for screening for the same position in 2016.

The the Senate said that security report available to it showed that Mr Magu is not fit to be chairman of the body. They also fingered him for corruption and financial irregularities.

Despite all these, President Buhari sent Magu's name for reappointment in January 2017. Dino Melaye, a Senator from Kogi pointed out a few sins of Magu. The first was a report from the DSS stating that the EFCC boss owned a very expensive house and other properties that could not be explained. This document released by Dino Melaye also showed the process with which the EFCC forcibly confiscated assets from Nigerians who have cases with the EFCC.

Magu denied the allegations and said he had no hand in them. President Buhari continued to nominate him as the Chairman of the EFCC despite these recommendations.

3. Mohammed Adamu

In February 2021, a Nigerian lawyer, Maxwell Okpara sued President Buhari on the matter pertaining to then Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

In the suit, Okpara argued that Mohammed Adamu's tenure had expired according to the law which states a civil or public servant shall not work more than 35 years, but Mohammed Adamu's lawyer provided proof that it was in fact the President who extended his client's tenure to exceed his service age.

As the matter was in court and on the mouths of many Nigerians, President Buhari allowed Mohammed Adamu to stay in office another three months before he was replaced by Alkali Baba
