Taking the whole of donbass plus kharviv down to Dnipro all the way down to Odessa, will give Russia more access to the Azov and black sea and improves their fortunes economically and military wise. Currently, they do not have much access to the sea and as such can't really project military strength the way they would have loved to. It's the reason they have just a few aircraft carriers and have smaller warships.

It also has huge gas reserves. Europe is not the only destination they can sell their goods to. With Russia beginning to look towards Asia, Middle East and Africa, they would somehow find a way to leverage on the economic opportunities that comes with having that part of Ukraine. A NATO build up would not be a big deal for Russia once she can have access to the sea. Expect them to start building larger nuclear armed warships that would be stationed at sea. What it would mean for the whole of Eastern Europe is that they would become a very volatile region. This would become a big headache for all the countries in that region. In fact, it would be a problem for the whole of Europe as a whole. A heavily militarized Europe is just few moments away from total extinction.
