Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari, for­mer governor of Zamfara State, at the weekend stat­ed that his ongoing case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Com­mission (EFCC) won’t af­fect his bid to become the next national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Yari, who stated this in an interview with Daily Independent, allayed fears of his supporters who are worried that the ongoing trial will negatively affect his bid for the number one position in the APC.

When asked if he was worried about the ongo­ing case with EFCC, Yari, who has been under the an­ti-graft’s searchlight over his handling of proceeds of Paris Club refunds since 2017, said, “There is noth­ing to worry about, noth­ing to worry about”.

Yari, a former chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, was detained by the EFCC in April over al­leged illegal financial deal­ings and misappropriation of funds.

Speaking further, Yari also described most of the allegations leveled against him as untrue, challenging anyone with evidence to come forward with it. He said some of the ru­mours being spread about him have been investigated and found out to be untrue.

“They have circulated rumours that I got mon­ey from the London Par­is Club, that I robbed the state and did this that and that but I challenge anyone either in the Governors’ Forum or in the state – anybody!

“I have mentioned it times without number, that if there is any fronts man or collaborator with­in or outside who is hold­ing money on my behalf or who knows where I kept money, I say that God should not spare him if he decides to cover me up!

“I made it very clear but at least, I know myself what I have been doing and what I did for my people and the (Governors’) Fo­rum, what I even did for my party the APC. So, whatev­er lies someone wants to tell, he should put the facts on the ground. That is the most important; not using some faceless cowards to disseminate fabricated lies.

“If there is anybody who knows any account of mine anywhere, either in Nigeria or anywhere or that of any of my associ­ates, they should come and put it before the public”.

In a related develop­ment, the APC has released approved schedule of ac­tivities and guidelines for conduct of its nationwide ward congresses scheduled for Saturday, July 31, 2021.

The party also granted waivers to returning mem­bers of the ward executives and new members to con­test for any of the 27 ward executive offices and dele­gates for local government and state congresses.

The notice of timeline and activities for the ward congress released on Sun­day in Abuja by the par­ty’s Secretary, Caretaker/ Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CE­CPC), Sen. John James Akpanudoedehe, indicat­ed purchase of nomina­tion forms for ward, local government/area councils, and state congresses will take place from July 19 to August 28, 2021.

Screening of aspirants for the ward party posi­tions is scheduled for July 29 to 30, 2021.

Ward congresses will hold July 31, 2021. Appeals arising from ward con­gresses will hold August 2 to 7, 2021.
