The boy is just not smart, he didn't think of the implication of nominating her before he did.
He only sees it like he has to fulfill the task without thinking deep about what a correct guess will do to the wildcards.

I honestly don't know why two old men like that are bullying Beatrice. It says a lot of their character, that they have to resort to bullying someone who already has self-esteem issues.
