The countries that we have lost to so far, they have sports facilities in their secondary schools that some most Nigerian universities can only dream of. They also have structures in place...from youth to senior level...as well as lots of properly trained coaches.

In the US, which we lost to, there are basketball courts in many towns and even villages.

How many basketball courts exist in Nigerian villages? How many kids play basketball compared to football?

The day we take steps to improve these issues is the day we start winning and competing. For now, we have to rely on the limited talent pool that we have.

I have been following our national basketball teams for nearly 2 decades. And I had no hope before the olympics, even when we won the exhibition matches (which are not a good assessment of team quality...since everyone and his mother is playing to avoid picking up an injury before the main tournament starts)

Nigeria is not a basketball nation. Most Nigerians don't care for or play basketball. There are few active players, not enough professional teams, and our basketball league matches are poorly attended. Most schools in the country don't even have a basketball pitch, and there are no active basketball structures at youth and U-23 level.

(France that beat us today, was beaten by Japan. Both countries have basketball pitches everywhere..in Japan many secondary schools have indoor basketball halls. Nigeria...no way)

So we always end up with a team of overseas nigerians, or a lacklusture homebased side, or both. And even when the overseas Nigerians are playing in the US, because of the overabundance of talent there...they barely get a look in in their WNBA clubs.

The only way we can improve is simp;le....get more interest in basketball here, and it will grow from here. Just like the USA went from being nobodies in women football in the 1980's to world cup winners by 1999....

I totally agree with you...if the foundation is faulty, what can one really achieve?
