MTN Nigeria, the largest network by market share, has announced plans to reconstruct the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, under the road infrastructure task credit (RITC) scheme.

Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, made this known in the company’s unaudited results for the half-year ended June 30, 2021, published on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX).

The RITC scheme grants income tax credit to companies and individuals that provide funding for the refurbishment and rehabilitation of roads.

The scheme is a public-private partnership (PPP) intervention that enables the Nigerian government to leverage private sector capital and efficiency for the construction, repair, and maintenance of critical road infrastructure in key economic areas in Nigeria.

Participants will be entitled to utilise the total cost (Project Cost), incurred in the construction or refurbishment of an eligible road as a tax credit against their future Companies Income Tax (CIT) liability, until full cost recovery is achieved.

In April, the federal government awarded Dangote Cement with tax credit certificates valued at N22.32 billion for the construction of construction of Apapa-Oworonshoki-Ojota road in Lagos and the Lokoja-Obajana-Kabba road connecting Kogi and Kwara states.

Toriola said the federal government and the telecommunications company have commenced discussions about the road project.

“2021 marks the 20th anniversary of MTN’s presence in Nigeria. As we celebrate this milestone, we are pleased to announce that our Board of Directors has approved our participation in the Road Infrastructure Tax Credit (RITC) Scheme,” Toriola said.

“This is in response to Government’s drive towards public-private partnerships in the rehabilitation of critical road infrastructure in Nigeria. We intend to participate in the restoration and refurbishment of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

“Conversations in this regard have already commenced, and further announcements will be made in due course.”

Toriola said MTN Nigeria will invest N640 billion over the next three years to expand broadband access across the country, in line with the federal government’s 2020-2025 national broadband plan.

“In line with our desire to plant deeper and more permanent roots in Nigeria, we have also initiated plans to commission a purpose-built, state of the art MTN Head Office, designed to act as a central hub for our network, a catalyst for creativity and innovation, and a showcase for the flexible working structures that are driving efficiency gains in this new normal working environment,” he added.

“Aligned with our wider commitment to environmental sustainability, it will meet the highest global environmental standards, demonstrating the role of green technology in our future.

“Following MTN Group’s stated intention to sell down up to 14% of its investment in MTN Nigeria, subject to market conditions over the medium-term, MTN Nigeria’s shareholders approved an equity shelf programme at the last Annual General Meeting. This will facilitate a process to increase ownership of the Company by more Nigerian retail and institutional investors.”

TheCable had reported that MTN Nigeria lost lost 7.6 million mobile subscribers in the first half of 2021 due to regulatory restrictions on new SIM sales and activations.

Okay...

You're going to drop your jaw when you learn the amount of money generated through tax in Onitsha alone, not to talk of Enugu and environs. But why has this road remained this way?

This project has nothing to do with the magnanimity of MTN, which is a business, so don't get all happy. Every dime going into it will be recovered with toppings because you will be made to pay for it.

Which makes me wonder what the main tax paid by people is used for.

In a country that was once sold by the Royal Niger Company, nothing surprises me again, however I very much welcome the idea of MTN doing the construction as far as they will not hand the project over to corrupt government officials.

Sometimes I even wish we can run a virtual government where telecoms like MTN will take over government, then elections will be like to vote in this election text Vote to 131, >>>For PDP text 1, for APC text 2, press 0 to check your vote credit>>> total SMS cost #50

Provided there won't be a tollgate on the road, this is a really commendable move. Second Niger bridge is the first and only federal bridge to be tolled in Nigeria. Even the almighty Third Mainland Bridge has no tollgates.

This is the stupi.d government that claims the road has been completed. That their useless Sukkuk funds are being used for the road. This is what you find in the East. Why didn’t MTN construct the Daura - Niger Republic rail line. The East is always used as a guinea pig for projects that are known to fail. Buhari is devils incarnate.

This is so cool. If the FG politics won't favour the Igbo's, they should go through CSR backdoor with their influence in strategic multinationals. I will like to see a more ambitious project of the mould like power or technical schools.

You start to wonder what's the essence of government if almost every aspect of government service delivery is done by individuals, communities or private firms. Why do we have one Buhari at Aso Rock then? To sign off oil and gas blocs to cronies?

MTN should engage their own contractor ,and pay them directly. dont let this Buhari APC govt choose the contractor and do not give them money to do the project, otherwise 95% will go to their pockets while 5% to the project

Most folks won't see the booby trap in this seemingly kind gesture from MTN. The project cost will be inflated leaving them with more tax credit beyond necessary. This is Nigeria. Tax credit my foot. More so, the job done might not even be of standard quality. As long as the road is constructed and money is spent, they are entitled to a tax credit. Good luck!

After this false govt had made so much noise of reconstructing the road. Ngige will not let us hear word especially during elections on how Buhari has awarded the contract and reconstructed the road. Now after obvious embezzlement MTN is intervening. What happens to the already awarded contract?

Nice initiative, if you ask me. Other companies should please pick up other roads, like the Badagry expressway. Two companies can even come together to construct one road

Any legal way na way... As long as we the citizens are the ones that'll enjoy the amenities, I'm all for it.

If possible, let LASG follow the same approach. Seems the number of bad roads is beginning to overwhelm the governor. There are a lot of terribly bad roads in Abule-egba, Ayobo, INSIDE ALIMOSHO, Papa Ashafa... The contractors now dig up the roads, and leave it that way, when rain falls, the water thus stays on the road instead of flowing through the gutters (Igbayilola and Ebun in Papa Ashafa comes to mind)

LASG can work with banks to construct some of these roads and give them a kind of tax relief

Another tax evasion + corruption opportunity. Let's assume:
Actual costs to fix road = 3 billion
MTN declares costs as = 16 billion

Corrupt govt officials get kickbacks of = 4 billion
MTN gets tax credit profit of = 9 billion

Business continues...

This is a very good move. I have told some of my friends, to fix Nigeria's basic amenities, allow private sectors to come in and give them some tax exemptions.

Taking Rivers state as an example, Indorama can comfortably supply power to the whole of Eleme with their standby Gas Turbines.

In Onne, all those companies can supply power to Onne and some part of Ogoni. Same goes for companies at Trans-Amadi.

Shell at I.A and R.A can take care of Rumuomasi too same way Agip is doing in Omoku and NLNG/Shell in Bonny and Finima.

You can also tell them to take care of roads and public hospitals and schools. This way, we won't lack anything.

But our politicians being who they are won't allow it because they want to keep the masses at their mercy. We honestly need a revolution in this country, but the younger generation are not serious.
