Endeavour To Imbibe The Ọmọlúàbí Culture - Eburu Of Iba by Jimsonjaat96(m): 7:57pm On Aug 05, 2021
The Eburu of Iba, Ọba (Dr) Adekunle Adeogun Okunoye Oyedeji ll has beseeched the 2021 Batch B stream 1 Corps Members to be 'ọmọlúàbís' which is a Yorùbá phrase for virtuous living or good behavioural and attitudinal display. He advised them to remain dutiful throughout their one-year service to their fatherland and after.

"In Yorùbá land, Ọmọlúàbí is the character everyone should pursue. It is a concept or philosophy that describes person of good character and conduct. It includes virtues such as respect, truthfulness, bravery, and self control. These characters may not necessarily be displayed all at once but when any of these characters are displayed by an individual, the Yorùbás recognize the person as an Ọmọlúàbí."

He said that in Yorùbá custom, it is imperative that people become conscious of their words and actions as there are resultant consequences. Also, respect for elderly people is non-negotiable.

He therefore encouraged the corps members to keep these advice at the back of their mind as they go to their Places of Primary Assignment (PPA).

He highlighted key features of the Yorùbá culture which includes the fact that the Yorùbá derive joy in the fluent use of their language, hardwork, very strong hierarchical society, modesty and truthfulness even in serious and life threatening situations.

Other key features of the Yoruba culture explained by the Eburu are that of self control especially during provocation, faithfulness and loyalty to one's family, friend, employers and other authorities are, according to him, highly appreciated by the Yorubas.

Speaking further, he said the Yoruba culture is more concerned with slow and steady way of life, even if it takes a long time for them to achieve their goals, they keep at it.

Being an Omoluabi, according to the Eburu brings prosperity while flaunting the values of the omoluabi has consequences.

His Royal Majesty reminded the corps members that their youthful phase is only for a time as it si only a phase in life. As such, he urged them to utilize the opportunity they have now as youths to contribute to the unity and integration of Nigeria by maintaining good behavior everywhere they go.

He charged the corps members to engage in activities that will promote peace and oneness during this one year service and even after the service year. He enjoined them to desist from vices that would put them in trouble.

He ended the lecture by emphasising that actions such as kidnapping, robbery, raping, violence, internet fraud, and other unpleasant behaviours should not be heard of among them as Corps members during and after their service.
