From the inception of democratic rule, states in Nigeria have had a dominant political party where leaders emerge in different elective positions in every election cycle. For Abia State, it is the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

The PDP has 'reigned supreme' in Abia State since 1999. From Orji Uzor Kalu to Theodore Orji, down to Okezie Ikpeazu, the PDP has always won the governorship elections.

Although T. A. Orji won the 2007 governorship election with the Progressive People's Alliance (PPA), he later returned to the PDP.

It is the same story in the legislature, as representatives at both state and national levels have come from the PDP.

The APC has five seats out of 35, a statistics the party Iooks to change in the 2023 general elections.

The party welcomed new members at their last registration and revalidation exercise in the state, including former big names from the PDP: Rt. Hon. Uzor Azubuike, Hon. Blessing Nwagba, and Obinna Oriaku.

Uzor Azubuike was a two-time member at the Abia State House of Assembly (between 2003 and 2011), where he represented Aba Central Constituency. He also served as the Deputy Speaker of the House within that period.

In 2011, he won election into the House of Representatives to represent Aba North/Aba South Federal Constinuency at the 7th Assembly.

In 2015, he was appointed the Abia State Commissioner for Agriculture, the post he held until 2019.

He was the PDP flagbearer for Aba North/Aba South Federal Constinuency for the 2019 general elections.

He headed party congresses in several states and undertook several assignments for the PDP.

However, on 12th July 2021, Hon. Azubuike declared that he was joining the APC "to help reposition Abia State for better National integration".
