When the Blues face Villarreal in Belfast tomorrow, it will be their fifth Super Cup final, so we take a look back at the previous four finals, which span two decades, and how they performed. Real Madrid 0 Chelsea 1 - 1998 This was Chelsea's first and only successful Super Cup venture. Gianluca Vialli's exciting Chelsea side defeated Real Madrid, managed by Guus Hiddink, in Monaco. Gus Poyet scored the game's sole goal with a well-placed shot from outside the area 10 minutes from time. After winning the League Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup in only six months, it was Chelsea's third trophy in many months, confirming Chelsea's growing stature as a force to be reckoned with both at home and abroad. Chelsea 1 Atletico Madrid 4 - 2012 It was a completely different scenario 14 years later in Monaco when Atletico Madrid demolished the Blues 4-1. Falcao, a future Chelsea striker, was the star, scoring a hat-trick in the first half. Chelsea received a consolation goal from Gary Cahill on an otherwise unforgettable night. Bayern Munich 2 Chelsea 2 - 2013 (Bayern won 5-4 on penalties) Chelsea's Europa League victory against Benfica earned them a spot in the Super Cup final for the second year in a row, this time against Bayern Munich, whom they had beaten in the Champions League final the year before. In 1998 and 2012, Chelsea competed in the first and last single-leg Super Cups hosted in Monaco. Since then, the match has shifted around Europe, with their epic showdown with Bayern Munich taking place in Prague's Eden Arena. Hazard appeared to have scored the winner in extra time for the 10-man Blues, putting them 2-1 ahead after Fernando Torres and Franck Ribery had traded goals in the first 90 minutes. A last-gasp equalizer, though, forced the Super Cup to go to penalties for the first time, when Romelu Lukaku's saved shot proved crucial. Liverpool 2 Chelsea 2 - 2019 (Liverpool 5-4 on penalties) Another tense match, this time in Istanbul, finished with the Blues narrowly losing after a penalty shootout. They took the lead via Olivier Giroud before the European champions took control early in extra-time thanks to a Sadio Mane brace. Chelsea came back to draw level thanks to a Jorginho penalty, and Tammy Abraham's shot was saved after the first nine spot-kicks were scored. Those are the only two Super Cups in which a penalty shootout was used to decide the winner. Hopefully, Chelsea will come out victorious in today's Super Cup final to add to the already existing trophies they have accumulated under Thomas Tuchel. Do you think Chelsea can win the Super Cup? Villarreal wouldn't be easy for chelsea to win, but I still believe Chelsea comes out on top because of their defensive tactics which may like keep Villarreal at Bay. 2 Likes |
