More Boko Haram fighters have reportedly surrendered to troops of the Nigerian Army.

DailyTrust reports that military sources claim 190 insurgents and their wives surrendered in Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State on Saturday, August 14.

According to the security source, those who surrendered comprise top fighters, foot-soldiers, their wives and children. The surrendered terrorists also appealed to the Nigerians to forgive them and assured residents that they were voluntarily surrendered, saying peace is better than war.

This development comes days after some insurgents who surrendered begged Nigerians for forgiveness. Their plea had generated mixed reactions as some persons said they do not deserve mercy based on their past.

The Nigerian military claims over that a total of 1081 terrorists and their families have so far surrendered to the armed forces in the last two weeks.

It is all well and good to accept their surrender if indeed they have surrendered and this isn't some government propaganda about "winning the war against terrorism".

But providing special treatment to these "repentant" terrorists makes a mockery of the sacrifice of the fallen Nigerian soldiers. It is like spitting on the graves of these soldiers who must be rolling in their graves after paying the ultimate price for their country.

The government is rewarding terrorist behaviour and depleting the morale of serving soldiers who have lost their colleagues and loved ones in the hands of these terrorists.
In other words, the government is saying "it's okay to be a terrorist and kill people and when you're done, we'll roll out the red carpet and welcome you with open arms".

If you do the crime you must be prepared to do the time no matter how repentant or remorseful you might be.

In saner climes, these terrorists will be made to face the consequences of their actions.
