One of the biggest challenges facing organizations today is how to keep internal communications easy and flowing. Communication is vital to building customer loyalty, motivating employees, communicating important strategic matters, and alerting executives to emerging opportunities. However, with hundreds of documents, memos, letters, and communications coming in every day, it can become difficult to know where to start. Organizations must develop and maintain effective internal communications strategies to make sure that the flow of information is clear and consistent. Internal Communications Strategies will:

An internal communications strategy articulates what the key role is uniquely qualified to accomplish to aid drive company results. It identifies which communications are essential to the success of the organization as a whole and which can be streamlined, targeted, or downsized. Make internal communications enjoyable also defines the goals that an organization must achieve, the time line for achieving those goals, the communication infrastructure required, and the resources required to implement and maintain those plans. All of this information is essential to understand the organization's internal communications environment.

An Internal Communication Strategy also establishes and maintains a company vision and mission statement that employees are expected to execute. The purpose of a vision and mission statement is to ensure that all employees understand what the company does, why it exists, and how they benefit from having a stake in the success of the enterprise. The vision and mission statement is an essential part of internal communications strategies because it helps employees understand their place within the larger organization and how they can contribute to its growth. The purpose of a vision and mission statement is not to describe all of the activities that will be taken part in the company, but rather it is intended to give employees a sense of direction. For example, if the statement says that all employees in the Company are to work on the development of customer solutions, the employee will understand that her job definition does not include her implementing the development of every possible customer solution.

Internal Communication Strategies also involves defining various levels of employee communications and relating these to each other. Each employee communication level includes the content, format, and delivery style. The level of communication is established by determining what is appropriate for employees to report to management, and how they should report. The style of communication, which can include informal or formal feedback, is established by evaluating how well employees understand the purpose of their internal communications strategies.

One of the most important aspects of an effective internal communication strategies is its ability to build employee engagement. It is difficult to effectively promote engagement among employees if people are completely unaware that they are engaged in the enterprise. Internal Communication Strategies should create an awareness of employee engagement so that employees know what they are doing and why. Achieving this level of engagement requires an understanding of what employees want and how they get it.

Another important factor in internal communications strategies is making sure that all goals are aligned. aligning all goals means that there will be alignment between what an employee is accomplishing, how that person is accomplishing it, and what his or her supervisor is accomplishing. There should always be some expectation of what an employee can accomplish, and what he or she cannot. When this expectation is set, employees will feel like they have a sense of responsibility and that they are part of something larger than themselves. This can improve internal costs and create a more cohesive organization.
