Corruption And Patriotism: Afghanistan As A Case Study by thinkmoney(m): 2:32pm On Aug 18, 2021
Afghanistan and Nigeria are very different but similarities especially in vital places can be found.
While it is a taken, that the West had totally lost appetite in continuing and fighting in Afghanistan which is understandable, gross corruption on the part of the Aghanistan democratic government and the consequential loss of patriotism on the part of the general populace is what allowed the 70 thousand strong Taliban with inferior weapons (and zero airforce) defeat a 300 thousand Afghan force with modern weapon and airforce.
There is an unfolding revelation now that Afghan security force could actually just be 300 thousand on paper. It's now being rumoured that there were thousands of ghost military and police personnel, that top government officials just overblow the strength of the aghfans forces so they can be taking the salaries for these ghost personnel.
Now, do the world 'ghost personnel/worker' sound eerily familiar to us Nigerians? The answer is yes!
Corruption sprays perfume on the ailing body of a society and hides the smell of putrefaction. It makes a country looks far stronger than it really
is. And when disasters strikes as it does many times, what happens is that the general populace do not see any reason to stand up and fight for a country that hasn't beneficted them in any way, they do not fight for people that hasn't represented their interest. While the corrupt leaders that have bled the country dry only gather their loots and run away.
It's this corruption and the consequential loss of patriotism in the general populace that make our troops with their modern weapons take flight many at times in the face of a Boko Aram (that is motivated by a deep seated ideology) onslaught.
