It is not the same road. Akure to Ado-Ekiti where you pass through Iju/Itaogbolu and Ikere-Ekiti is different from Akure-Owo road.

The armed robber that spearhead, coordinated or masterminded this operation mist be a college drop-out. His partners will deal with him.
How d hell he allowed those folks engaged in that sort of near-death risk without proper information?
Like someone said, I don't think it's armed robbers per se. Most likely Fulani herdsmen who have taken over the bushes along that road of recent. Perhaps they're nearby in the bush and the siren of the bullion van attracted them to try and see if they could hijack it without considering whether there was money in it or not. You know they aren't really smart.

Ipob/ESN don enter or I forgot, its not SE. The narrative would have gone like this. SUSPECTED IPOB/ESN ATTACKS A BULLION VAN KILLS 3 POLICE MEN AND CARTS AWAY THE WHOLE MONEY"

My guy i tire.
This idea came to my mind during a period in the early 2000's when robbers where slaughtering bullion van escorts for fun.
It became so horrific back then that banks seized operations for weeks in the east, especially at Aba.
I kept on wondering what type of dumb country we are in that keep on releasing security personnel to the wolves. They would round up the police they caught those days and burn them alive. It was horrible.

But on a serious note i think this my suggestion would work like magic.
Robbers would just abandon targetting bullion vans if adopted.
ceaser:
If it is Akure-Owo highway, then it is Fulani herders until proven otherwise. That is why they ended up robbing an empty bullion van. A career armed robber/bullion van robber will not rob any van at random, but will have done the necessary background checks and surveillance and be sure that his target is sure to ferry money.

A career kidnapper's surveillance will be within the purview of his own expertise - kidnapping people for ransom (K4R). They may have just happened on the bullion van. Including the fact that Fulani kidnappers are not so smart bunch, but are cowards emboldened by the muzzle of the weapons they wield, so the same insensible brashness made 'em to attack an empty bullion van.

Also criminals tend to respect each other's terriroty, I believe, and no armed robber will dare operate in a territory that is solely that of ferocious kidnappers else they risk losing their lives.

Or do you think any random armed robber from nowhere will dare go to Abuja-Kaduna highway, the turf of highly skilled Fulani kidnappers, to rob? Any robbery in that turf will have to be done by the kidnappers themselves who are probably diversifying sources of revenue.

The road you speak of is different from the Akure-Owó highway mentioned in the news article, a decrepit expressway compared to the pothole-ridden, gully-infested "lowway" you travelled.

You expect so much from a government of ineptitude. Your wise counsel is best valued and applied in sane environments, for the present political structure in Nigeria is designed to silence and subjugate novel ideas.

That must have been Akure-Ilawe-Ado axis. The Akure-Ìta ogbolu-Ikere-Ado route is a death trap and in fact now a hotbed for kidnappers because of the many bad spots that forces vehicles to slow down.

However, the robbers were unable to steal any funds as the bullion van was not carrying any cash when they struck, Odunlami added.

I wish the injured policemen a quick recovery.... These are part of sacrifice paid when dwelling in a failed State of ours.....

Which recovery Na, are they not birds of same feather, what's the difference between a policeman and armed robber. They're 5&6 bro
