Hell was let loose yesterday evening at Pen Cinema area of Agege as rival factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) engaged in a bloody clash. P.M.News gathered that a student of Lagos State University (LASU), Agege Outreach Centre, was shot dead during the clash. A man who works with the Code of Conduct Bureau, Alabi Sunday, 42, was shot in the head and was later rushed to the hospital with a bullet still lodged in his head.

The clash was between thugs loyal to the Lagos State NURTW chairman, Alhaji Saka Saula, and those supporting Alhaji Alamu Otegbeye.

They were said to be fighting over the control of motor parks in the area.

During the clash, offensive weapons including guns and machetes were freely used. Guns were shot indiscriminately repeatedly and many people were injured in the process.

Panic gripped people in the area while commercial activities were paralysed.

Motorists were forced to make a detour while properties worth millions of naira were vandalised.

It took the intervention of the Area ‘G’ Police Commander, Mr. Mobolaji Odesanya (ACP), Divisional Police Officer, Elere, Mr. Sunday Adetunji (CSP) and Mr. Adebisi (DSP) the Divisional Crime Officer, who deployed their men to the battle zone to quell the mayhem.

Those who passed through the area after hostilities subsided were compelled to raise up their hands in the air by the anti-riot policemen drafted to the area.

P.M.News observed this morning that anti-riot policemen and an armoured tank were stationed at the scene of the clash. When P.M.News contacted Alhaji Saula this morning, he said he did not know anything about the crisis. Bloody clashes between rival factions of NURTW have been regular in the metropolis and they have claimed several lives, most them innocent, Lagosians going about their lawful duties.

There have been series of clashes between various factions of the NURTW in different parts of Lagos lately and each time, innocent people are killed and maimed. One is compelled to ask whether these people operate under a separate constitution different from the Nigerian Constitution. One also wonders whether members of that union have normal human brains or brains that have been twisted by years of assault from overdose of indian hemp, akpetechi, paraga et al.
