Monarch, commissioner differ on LG chiefs’ performance

FEMI OYEWESO 20/05/2011 04:07:00
The Lagos State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Rotimi Agunloye, and the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, yesterday expressed different views on the performance of the chairmen of local government and the local council development areas (LCDAS) in the state.

While Oba Akiolu, in the full glare of the people, rated the local government chairmen and the LCDAs bosses below zero, describing them as pack of failures, Agunsoye poured encomium on the 57 council chiefs. They spoke at the ongoing press briefing to commemorate the fourth year administration of Governor Babatunde Fashola. Oba Akiolu lamented that the chairmen have, with impunity, been squandering council allocations without corresponding achievements. The monarch, therefore, said he would personally monitor all allocations to councils in his area. He urged his traditional ruler colleagues to do same, adding that the “packs of failures were tactically put in place to wreck the state”.

Oba Akiolu [b]described the council chairmen, who were present at the press briefing, as destroyers rather than developers they were meant to be. “Some of you have performed poorly. We want to know what comes to you and what you do with what you get, ” he said. Earlier, Agunsoye described his four year in the ministry as herculean, recalling, especially the controversies that trailed the creation of the 37 LCDAs. The commissioner, however, commended the council chairmen, supervisors and other key players in the local government administration for brilliant performance. He said: “It is only a cynic that will fail to applaud the concerted efforts of the state and local governments for the bold steps taken so far which were aimed at bringing the promised dividends of democracy to the citizenry.”

What dividends of democracy?

Why won't the commissioner praise them to the high heavens when they were “tactically put in place" by you know who and for "you know what?"
