PROFESSIONAL E-HAILING DRIVERS AND PRIVATE-OWNERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (PEDPAN)

WHY DO WE NEED COLLECTIVE BARGAINING POWER TO DEAL WITH APP COMPANIES?

The present individual partnership got us ridiculous low trip fare and denied us social welfare benefits as workers on App Companies platforms especially Uber/Bolt

THE PRICE ANALYSIS ON TRIP FARE OF UBER/BOLT AND OTHERS

UBER

▪️ Per Km CHARGE = #77

▪️ Per Minute CHARGE = #13

▪️ COMMISSION Per Trip = 25%

BOLT

▪️ Per Km CHARGE = #70

▪️ Per Minute CHARGE = #13

▪️ Commission Per Trip = 20%

 ANALYSIS USING UBER PRICE MODULE!

As an E-hailing Driver in Lagos State, it is either you own your car or you are on weekly rental or hired purchase (HP). For one to remain in the business, it is a MUST for one to cover 150 kilometers at every interval of active trip cumulatively.
Therefore:

150 kilometers × #77 =#11,550

For one to cover 150 kilometers on Lagos roads with traffic, one will spend nothing less than 10 hours on active trips. And 60minutes makes 1hour.

Therefore:

60minutes ×10hrs = 600minutes

:- 600min × #13 = #7,800

Total Kilometer ➕ Total Minute

#11,550 ➕ #7,800 = #19,350

MEANING THAT

#19,350 is the gross earning of an E-hailing Drivers for a day with over 15hours on the wheel 10hours on active trips and 5hours for waiting and driving to pickup location at every interval of trip request.

#19,350 – 25% commission of Uber = #14,513

For one to cover 150km and approximately 15 hours on wheel, one will use nothing less than 30 liters of fuel at the rate of #165 per litre.

Therefore:

= 30 liters ✖️ #165 = #4,950

Deduct this from the balance after commission.

#14,513 ➖ #4,950 = #9,563

Most cars on App Companies’ platforms nowadays are the cars ranging from 2.5 millions naira and above. Meaning that for one to remain in the business expecially when you are on weekly rentals, your target per day should be nothing less than #5,000 to deliver to your partner. This the only way a driver can meet up with #25,000 or #30,000 weekly delivery

If you deduct #5,000 from the balance after buying fuel.

Therefore:-

#9,563 ➖ #5,000 = #4,563

Meaning that:

The driver will be left with #4,563 excluding car maintenance cost, recharge card to communicate with the riders to know their exact pickup locations, subscription for data bundle and cost of feeding.

It is MUST that an E-hailing Driver save #1500 and above for car maintainance. And keep #500 for Data bundle and call card, and #1,500 for Feeding in the Morning, Afternoon and Evening.

Therefore to break it down further:-

#4,563 bal.➖ #1500 -#1,500 feeding ➖ #1000 Data&calls = #563

What it means is that practically using the above case study, average drivers is simply making #563 driving 15hours cumulatively in the street of Lagos.

In most cases, E-hailing Drivers hardly meet up with this Pessimistic figures. They struggle to make #15,000 on Gross earning per day.

*WHAT THEN IS THE WAY OUT?*

▪️Untill all the E-hailing drivers give PEDPA a strong support through our united voice to have Collective Bargaining with App Companies!

▪️Until the App Companies are forced to deal with Driver’s as a Union rather than as an individual driver as they are presently doing.

WHAT PROACTIVE STEPS HAS PEDPA TAKEN TOWARDS DRIVERS LIBERATION?

After concerted efforts by PEDPA to ensure all App Companies recognize Union and give room for collective deliberation, we finally got an App Company that shows willingness to partner with Driver’s through Union and made Contractual business agreements to address all the grey areas.

 ACTIVE RIDES IS DRIVERS FRIENDLY!

WHAT ARE THE BREAKDOWN OF ACTIVE RIDES TRIP FARE?

ACTIVE RIDES

▪️ Per Km CHARGE = #80

▪️ Per Minute CHARGE = #15

▪️ Commission Per Trip = 15%

 *INTERESTINGLY,

5% out of Active Rides 15% Commission goes into drivers Cooperative Wallet for welfare such as HMO, SOFT LOAN, CAR LOAN, PENSION PLAN AND REAL ESTATE PLAN

PEDPA TRIP FARE PROPOSAL

#100 PER KM CHARGE

#15 PER MINUTE CHARGE

MINIMUM FARE #1000

But because of the market indexes, we can’t negotiate for #100 per kilometer for our drivers on Active Ride but we achieved #80 per kilometer, #15 per minute, reduction in their commission to 15% and 5% of it goes to drivers cooperative wallet for welfare as stated above!

PRICE ANALYSIS ON ACTIVERIDE

(Using the same case study above)

Active Rides price per Kilometer is
#80 per kilometer.

150 kilometer ✖️ #80= #12,000

Using 10hrs as above case study shows.

60min ×10hrs = 600minutes

#15 ✖️ 600 minutes = #9,000

Therefore:-

#12,000 ➕#9000 = #21,000 Gross Income

Deduct 15% Commission from the #21,000

#21,000 ➖ #3150 = #17,850

Remember that 5% of the #3150 will still go to drivers Cooperative wallet for welfare such as HMO, SOFT LOAN, CAR LOAN, PENSION PLAN AND REAL ESTATE.

Deducting the price for 30litres fuel at the rate of 165/Ltrs

#17,850 ➖ #4,950 for fuel ➖ #5,000 for car daily delivery = #7,900

#1500 for feeding and #1000 for data subscription and to calls=#2,500-#7,900= #5,400

#5,400 is for driver earning after all expenses, which is not bad as a starting point for advocacy for E-hailing Driver’s DIGNITY OF LABOR and their welfare.

This is what Professional E-hailing Drivers and Private-Owners Association of Nigeria (PEDPAN) has being able to achieve with collective bargaining we did on behalf of E-hailing Drivers Community for all E-hailing Drivers and Lease partners to migrate to Active Rides App Company.

My great Comrades, TEAMWORK is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results. – Andrew Carnegie
And we have more to gain when we walk and work together

The different is clear with the Decoded details. PEDPA Excos have done justice to all the grey areas. We were to achieve this milage through collective bargaining.

 A CALL FOR ACTION!

Now is the time to for us to abandon App Companies that refuses to give us collective bargaining power to protect the DIGNITY of Service we rendered on their platforms.

We are the face of the transportation services on App Companies’ platforms! therefore PEDPAN has fought so hard for that Unit to be established on App Companies Business Module.

Support PEDPAN Emancipation Advocacy Campaign to abolish systemic slavery introduce by dictatorial app companies.
