Igbo Govs, Political Leaders Meet For The Political Future Of Ndigbo by aljharem3: 11:08pm On May 22, 2011
A one-day joint meeting of South-East governors and Igbo political leaders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) met in Enugu on Sunday with a view to charting a new course for Ndigbo in the next political dispensation.

Although no communique was issued after the closed door meeting that was held at Lion Building,Government House, Enugu, a source revealed that the incessant bickerings and rancour especially among Igbo political elite, repositioning of Ndigbo to enable the people get a fair share of the national cake under President Goodluck Jonathan’s regime were among the issues that topped the agenda of the meeting.

A former vice-president, Dr Alex Ekwueme and the zonal president of PDP, Olise Metu, were some of the prominent politicians who attended the meeting. The governors of Enugu, Anambra, Imo and Ebonyi state were also present while Governor Theodore Orji of Abia was conspicuously absent.

Emerging from the meeting which lasted for about three hours, Governor Peter Obi of Anambra said they had no statement for the waiting newsmen and when asked about the position they had taken on the burning issue of allocation of top positions in the incoming Jonathan government, Obi parried the question.

He said: “this is not strictly a South-East governors’ meeting because we have other statesmen like Alex Ekwueme in attendance. We deliberated on a number of issues but we don’t want to make comment on them. They are confidential.

“We thank the people of South-East for their support for President Jonathan in the last elections and their support for other candidates.”

It was further learnt that the leaders of the zone might have decided not to make public their position on the sharing of positions because the zone, allegedly, did not bargain with the president before the elections.

“We are only interested in what will benefit the larger Igbo people for now,” a competent source informed the Nigerian Tribune.
