In the United States:
The number of people incarcerated in state and federal prisons and local jails dropped 14% from around 2.1 million in 2019 to 1.8 million by late 2020. The overall decrease in numbers represents a 21% decline from a peak of 2.3 million people in prison and jail in 2008.

2.3 million prisonsoners vs 200 million Nigerians

Modified

This part is about the State prison system, we have the federal and state run prisons.

A common measure used by states to understand this cost is the “average cost per inmate,” calculated by taking the total state spending on prisons and dividing it by the average daily prison population.13 This figure represents the amount the state spends annually, on average, to staff and maintain the prisons and provide all prison services. Among the 45 states that provided data (representing 1.29 million of the 1.33 million total people incarcerated in all 50 state prison systems), the total cost per inmate averaged $33,274 and ranged from a low of $14,780 in Alabama to a high of $69,355 in New York. Eight states—Alaska, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont—had a cost per inmate above $50,000.14 Eighteen, mostly southern, states had costs less than $25,000, while 19 states had costs between $25,000 and $50,000.

80 billion dollars for 2 million prisoners on one hand and 39 billion dollars for 200 million on the other hand doesn't sound like an insult, rather it could be a wake up call.

The US govts spends 84 billion dollars on its prison system annually ...While the current Nigerian Budget is just 25 billion dollars shocked

So yes the US spends 3 times more on prison budget than the Nigeria govt spends on the national budget !!

Na wa this kind data makes me feel so unfortunate

I am a data analyst. Hence, I don't respond to emotions. Nigeria...fvck it!

The average cost of feeding an inmate in USA is around $8.6. The minimum wage in USA (as at the last time I checked) was $11-this is daily.

Thus, the govt spends over 78% of her minimum wage on inmates feeding. If we bring other costs into this mix, the value could be as high as $25 to take care of inmates daily.

Conversely, Nigeria spends N450 on inmates feeding daily (on paper). This is 1.5% or 0.005 times the minimum wage.

Bringing it home, the US govt spends $258 or N136, 740 on an inmate monthly. The total Nigeria budget in 2020 is less than N11Tr. If will push it up to 11 trillion, each Nigerian would get N54,140 or $100.26 per year. This is NOT UP TO HALF of what is used to feed a prisoner per month in USA. Yet this is what is available to us per year.

This is what many are yet to grasp.

Now let's forget all the bullshit on social media. If you are made the Nigerian president today, where will you get the $89 billion to spend on the budget without borrowing? Let's be real. The country has been sent to the dark ages. Many still don't get this.

These are the questions journalist should be asking our politicians, so the electorates can form a decision based on the response.

How can the cost of governance be so expensive in Nigeria given the kind funds available to run the country?

But you did not answer the question

DO we spend dollars in Nigeria?

Do we change Naira to Dollars before before we buy petrol in Nigeria?
How much is one litre of petrol in America and how much is it it Nigeria

Do we change Naira to Dollars before before we buy beer in Nigeria?

Do we change Naira to Dollars before before we visit barber in Nigeria?

How much is a shoeshine in America and how much is it it Nigeria

For your information in NewYork you could spend anything between $40- 150 on a haircut

According to your logic and calculation
that is anywhere between 20000-75000 Naira is that what people spend on haircuts in Nigeria?

You would be looking to spend $8-12 to drink a pint of beer in New York = 4000 -6000 Naira . Is that what we pay for a bottle of beer in Nigeria?

In New York the Cheapest loaf of bread you will find will start at $1.50 - 750 Naira. Is thatwhat we pay for bread in Nigeria

One thing you don't know is that the politicians in this part of the world are clueless and if you expect anything sensible from them then you are both in the same boat. All politicians form an idea from what is being discussed in the streets, social media, etc. They don't have anything new to bring to the table. Quit believing in them. You have a valid argument, it has already affect the views I held, but lets compare minimum earning.
In Nigeria minimum wage is 18,000 naira, that is 900 naira per day ( Day job na 2k) for 20 workdays a month, it translates to 113 naira fifty kobo per hour.

In US minimum pay is $7.25.

Let's compare both earnings.

How much TRADITIONAL STREET FOOD (mama put) can you use 113.5 naira to buy?

How much TRADITIONAL STREET FOOD (McDonald's, burger king) can you use $7.25 naira to buy?

Now take mama put to USA and bring Burger king to Nigeria.

Reason am abeg, going by minimum wage anology, what purchasing power does the earning per hour have?

Services rendered are higher in US, but items with raw materials domiciled and produced in US are much cheaper.

American dollar is stable enough to be used as yardstick and besides the USD is fairly generally accepted world over. It can be used here as leveller. These examples you giving are too petty . Don't we buy used cars and electronics etc at same price in America before even shipping, clearing and reselling/ rebuying in Nigeria? Why didn't u use that as example. How much do senators and ministers receive in other US? How much do ours receive?

It is a complex subject , not one for superficial 2 minute l analysis but
the simple fact is that the idea of of comparing prison budget with National budget is foolish

Since we are talking prison why not compare the cost of keeping one prisoner in prison?

That is not ppp. Ppp is better indicator of standard of living than GDP. The op has done excellent work. You are still confused because you are using economics textbook written in 1930.

Yes, we do.
Your phone, all the electronics you own, data, public infrastructures, equipment used in securing you and at least half of the food you eat are all priced in dollars.
If you still don't get it, just realize that money has no intrinsic value but what it can be exchanged for.
So, what we spend in Nigeria doesn't matter but its exchange value and the source of goods and services.

Did I define PPP
Did I introduce the term PPP

You clearly have a need to prove you are knowledgeable but I do not have time to cover elementary stuff of to prove a point
It is a theoretical construct of dubious practical value because even within the 50 states of America there is a huge variation in cost of living
