The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested its former Assistant Commander of Narcotics (ACN), Mohammed Loko, for allegedly aiding and abetting a disabled suspect, Davis Odu, to export 1.0 kg of powdery substance suspected to be cocaine to the United Kingdom .

According to a statement by Ofoyeju Mitchell, Public Affairs Officer of the agency, Loko, who was the Acting State Commander, Niger State Command, left Minna, the Niger State capital, to Kano to facilitate the easy passage of Davis Odu through the airport for the sum of N500,000.

He said Davis was, however, arrested same day at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano (MAKIA) during the outward screening of passengers on KLM Flight to Amsterdam with the substance suspected to be cocaine strapped in his pants and trousers.

“Davis on interrogation, mentioned three other persons; Idopa, Jay Jay and Mohammed Loko as his accomplices.

“Davis, who hails from Ogun State and popularly known as Lekan, is a polytechnic graduate and a second time offender. He was first arrested by operatives of the NDLEA at Seme border in 2003 while attempting to smuggle cocaine to neighbouring Benin Republic,” he said.

He was then prosecuted and sentenced to a two-year jail term.

Regarding the latest incident on 10 April 2007, Davis alleged that he gave N500,000 to Loko to assist him go through the airport with ease.

Said Mitchell: “Loko has since been invited for interrogation while Idopa and Jay Jay who are at large have been declared wanted by the agency.”

He quoted the Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA , Ahmadu Giade, as saying: “the agency will continue to exit any staff whose interest is at variance with that of the agency and our country Nigeria.” Regarding the cripple, Giade said that it is bad to use physical disability as an excuse for drug trafficking, adding that perhaps a longer jail term may have prevented the unrepentant suspect from going back to the illicit trade.

The NDLEA boss has ordered that Loko be charged to court together with Davis for his alleged role, having been dismissed from the agency in accordance with established rules and regulations, adding that no effort will be spared in addressing illicit drug trafficking and abuse in the country.

Consequently, the agency will on Monday 23 July Loko before the Federal High Court sitting in Kano for his alleged offence.
