Safeguarding The Garden City Against Flooding: A Clarion Call.

The Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NiMet, warned of slim chances of flash floods across 34 states of the federation including Rivers State.

As we all know, the main cause of flooding in Nigeria is heavy rains. Although this may be natural, it is almost impossible to stop it, especially when global warming puts the world at risk as a result of the continues depletion of the Ozone layer due to activities of greenhouse gases. I can tell you for free as an environmentalist that most of the other factors that cause flooding are man-made (anthropogenic factors) and therefore can be avoided.

Over the years it has been an annual tradition by the Rivers State Government through the ministry of works to carryout steady desilting of our canals for effective flow of water to mitigate for the perennial flood in parts of our city and has resulted to the instantaneous drying up of the flash floods.

As can be seen in some parts of the state where the state government has constructed new drainage system while opening up and expanding existing drains in areas like the popular NTA Road, Old GRA and the disilting of most part of the drainage system in Mile 4 Ikwerre road down and the Ntawogba creek.

Safeguarding our city is a collective thing as citizens. How do we see people building in waterways or dumping garbage down drains? Let us support the government by cleaning out our drains and properly disposing our waste. With unity of purpose we can achieve a flood free state

“Floods are ‘acts of God,’ but flood losses are largely acts of man.”
Gilbert White.

Rivers State is our state, let's collectively make it better.
