How Can You Ensure A Healthy Living In Nigeria? by doksblog(m): 10:16am On Sep 07, 2021
In a country where there are so much to worry about (instability almost everywhere, economic hardship…..), there are some many negative situations that can drive one into a state of constant stress, malaise, anxiety or depression.

As individuals, we must be proactive and careful about our well-being, and also find ways to take care of our body and mind.

We all know that trying to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle, especially in Nigeria, is quite expensive. Everyone wants to take the easy way out.

However, below are few tips and tricks that can help you maintain a healthy lifestyle without spending too much in this very country commonly known as NAIJA:

How Can You Ensure A Healthy Living In Nigeria?

Eat Balanced Diet

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is one of the core elements of self-care.

Our bodies require sufficient nutrients and hydration to exist and be in the right shape. Aldo, our daily food choices affect our overall health.

Nigerians believe that eating healthy diet involves spending huge amount of money but that idea is actually false.

A healthy diet translates to you knowing what is actually right for your general well-being.

Remember your body requires protein, vitamins, fibre, carbohydrate, fat, minerals for proper development and you can get all these from your well-organised diet that includes unprocessed meat, fish, vegetables, sea foods, fruits and nuts.

All these are not far-fetched from your environment as a Nigerian. Manage your income and balance your diet for a healthy living.

Exercise Regularly

Exercise is not just beneficial physically, but also mentally. Regular exercise can improve your physical health, decrease your risk for serious health conditions, help you feel better emotionally, improve your sleep, and also help you feel more confident and motivated.

As a Nigerian, you have a lot of opportunity to keep yourself fit. You can maintain a low key lifestyle (which is healthy) by walking down the street, trek to the nearby market, walk to the nearest bus-top, participate in evening football training section (if possible, but that is my favourite) or walk to that newspaper stand.

Ever wonder how our predecessors lived a healthy life? They lived by involving themselves in regular physical activities.

Most of them might not be aware of the impact, but it was actually the contributing factor to their healthy living.

They have no time for sedentary lifestyle such as spending much time on screen among others.

We too can incorporate that constructive lifestyle, because it’s in our bloodline.

Remember that being active doesn’t require the whole six (6) geo-political zones in Nigeria rather it requires engagement to daily chores.

Get Enough Sleep

Many young Nigerians suffer from sleep deprivation. For some, it is inevitable; returning home from work or school late, waking up early to beat traffic.

For others, they’re simply unable to stop Facebooking, Tweeting or watching premier league, La liga, movies until its well-past midnight.

Regularly getting a good night’s sleep is proven to improve your mental and emotional health, increase your lifespan and keep you alert and sharp.

Spend Time Around Positive People

Did you know that people around you can MAKE or MAR you? The people around you have a huge impact on your life.

It’s important to consider the people you’re spending quality time with, the same way you think about what you eat and how you’re exercising.

Papa Ada might be good in BetNaija, but is that what you want? Nnenna is there gossiping about Amaka’s achievements, is that all that matters?

What about uncertainties (the very enemy of investment)? What about you achieving your dreams and goals? What about tomorrow?

How to succeed and the smart strategies to use ought to be your focal point of discussion.

And there are positive people like that who can encourage you to move forward despite your lapses. Therefore, stay with positive people.

Avoid Smoking Or Drinking Irresponsibly

Have you been in psychiatric hospital before? Well, I personally work in such an environment.

I know this very one is difficult bearing in mind how Nigerian current society operates now.

But one of the hazardous situations that is injurious to one’s health is drinking and smoking irresponsibly, it affects one’s life span such that the body system of such an individual is badly affected.

The result of many mad people roaming your street might not actually be JUJU (evil spirit placed on people), rather as a result of indulging in dilapidating lifestyle such as drinking and smoking irresponsibly.

Routine Medical Check-Ups

I discussed about routine regular medical check-up in our previous article but it was specifically for pregnant mothers.

But same is applicable to all because of its importance. As a Nigerian, we find it so hard to go for routine medical check-ups.

This might be as a result of insufficient fund or negligence on health matters.

The simple truth is; always try and visit the hospital once in a while to see how your body is functioning and if you are living right.

It could be every six months or so, but make it a routine.

Finally, e no easy for people in Naija but God will always see us through in all our HUSTLE…
