As State Houses of Assembly in the southern part of Nigeria continue to enact laws against open grazing, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has called on the Federal Government to put an end to such laws.

The Secretary-General of the association, Saleh Alhassan, during a peace summit called on the National Assembly to intervene and stop state governors from establishing laws against open grazing, stating that such laws will undermine the relative peace and stability currently enjoyed in host communities and also threaten social order.

He also said that anti open grazing laws will destroy livestock production and send millions of people who depend on livestock value chain into poverty.

The Miyetti Allah called anti-open grazing laws "evil and dangerous, corrupt driven, oppressive and satanic agenda, which fundamentally goes against Fulani pastoralist culture and economic interest".

It should be noted that cattle herding is a private business and not a federal government venture.

What is the mistake Miyetti Allah made?

The mistake Miyetti Allah made in their call is to condemn anti-open grazing laws in totality.

As a private business venture that needs support, Miyetti Allah should be appealing to state governors to create a grazing route for herders, to enable them sustain their means of livelihood, and also assure governors of measures to solve farmer/herder clashes.
