The reason why a lot of people remain stagnant is because they're comfortable in that condition they are and are not ready to take the necessary steps. When such people see others succeeding they'll become jealous and envious of the successful people. Some people are moving with the wrong friends, the kind of friends you're moving with reflect how far you go in life so therefore any friendship that's keeping you from doing the right thing you cut it off and look for friends who will move your life forward. Always try to improve be it in your academics, career e.t.c. Never relent in improving yourself cause it'll pay at last.
