Hello nairalanders

A friend of mine informed me that he bought shares with First bank worth 100 thousand naira in 2007... He also told me that back then the shares were being sold at about 33 naira.

The guy never really understood much about the shares back then but he claims to have all his documents complete and intact, he told me that he would really like to know it's worth today and that he would like to sell it.

So I would like to get more info on how First bank operate and how much would 100 thousand naira worth of shares bought in 2007 would be worth today... And also how to sell them.

He will have to open an account with a stock broking firm and dematerialize the shares if he intends to sell. Then also contact First Registrars for his accrued dividend and bonuses. He bought the shares then in a boom market before the market stock market crashed in 2008 and the price fell drastically. One share is now worth about N7. 45.

His N100,000 worth of shares bought at N33 per share then should amount to about 3,030 shares. I don't know if he bought before the bonus of that year (2007) was declared so I won't consider that year.

In 2008, FBN gave share bonus of 1 for 4. Thus, his 3030 share would have attracted about 757 bonus shares to make the total about 3787. In 2009, they gave bonus of 1 for 6. Meaning he will have about 631 bonus to make his total 4418. They also offered a bonus share of 1 for 8 in 2010. That signifies that he got about 552 shares to make the total about 4970. The last FBN bonus share so far was issued in 2015. When they declared a bonus of 1 for 10 shares. Which will mean that he had bonus shares of about 497 to make his total current holding to be about 5467 shares.

My calculations above is based on assumption with the info you presented. A visit to first registrars will give the exact information needed. But, he will need to first of all connect with a stock broker.

Tell your friend to go to the office of their registrars First Registrar, it's on Abebe Street, Iganmu which is near Surulere. Just ask anyone to direct you to where Nigerian Breweries head office in Lagos is located. The office of First Registrars is a walking distance from it.

He needs to go with a copy of his government ID card and at least 2 passport pics so he can fill a form so that his accumulated unclaimed dividends can be processed and paid to him
