Very funny and reminds me of a particular day like that (over 5 yrs now). The ATM was just swallowing people's cards and the wicked thing the guys there did, they didn't warn other people coming that the ATM has gone crazy that day. So after inserting your card, they'll start laughing.

Meanwhile my sis and I were on another very long queue and as a smart girl, I sensed what was happening. Later my sis couldn't wait In the long line and said she'll go and use the vacant one. I tried to warn her but she said, she'll try; provided it's her bank, no shaking.

Immediately she inserted her card, the thing swallowed it. I burst Into laughter.
The security guy now made me laugh even more. He brought a broom stick and tried to use it to pull out the cards. I now asked him, oga, you wan give am toothpick too? Hahahahaaaa.... I will never forget that day.

When you push your card forcefully inside the atm card slot instead of allowing the machine to take the card when we slot it in half way

It is an instruction programmed into the ATM by the bank to forestall fraud. It usually occurs to bad ATM card, when you enter too many wrong pins etc

Only in Nigeria. Everything about Nigeria is upside down. Of course Nigerian bank atm refused to release my card like on two different occasions. On the contrary, during all my years abroad, no foreign atm ever swallowed my card. Another thing to note is that Nigerian atm dispense money before releasing your card. Thereby making so many people out of haste take their money and forget to take their card. The opposite is the case with overseas atm. They release your card first. Obviously in that scenario, it’s impossible for one to take card and forget to take his money

Funny that I bumped into this topic.

Couple of minutes ago, the guy just in front of me had his card retained by a first bank ATM. He hasn't even pressed any button. He slid in the card, and instead of the password menu to pop up, the machine still remained at the "insert your card" on screen instruction.

It would have been me had I been the next in line.

POWER FAILURE MOSTLY DURIN TRANSACTIONS.ATMS ARE MEANT TO BE ON UPS 24/7,BUT MOST BANKS ARE CARELESS USING WORN OUT UPS THAT DONT HOLD WHEN POWER GOES. BE WISE!

My brother we all understand what you mean, but it's actually called card retraction , there are five (5) reasons for this and there is no 6th

1) a customer using wrong PIN more than the required times (3 times)

2) Terminal's Internet glitch ( network seizure after transaction had commenced by the customer)

3) Terminal's Faulty card reader

4) Broken /Dirty looking/Worn out card chip of
a customer, and

5) Power outage .

Note: if it is your bank's ATM and it's a working day you can get back your debit card upon filling a form at the customer service unit,
While if its not your bank sorry just get a new card .

yesterday keystone bank debited me twice for a withdrawal of 20k and money did not dispense till now reverse never enter my bank account am angey like dis

I wanted to use an ATM. As soon as I inserted the card, bam! The ATM stop singing. There was no one around to ask. I waited for plenty minutes and nothing happened. Fvck! I needed the money badly cus I had to pay someone 40k from it. When I became certain that this machine is not gon return my card, I left.

Meanwhile the card belongs to my friend and he's away from town.

I later saw d security and I narrated my ordeal, then, instructed him to alert me when the ATM attendants shows.

Next day, the bankers showed up to reload the ATM vault. I rushed down after the security alerted me. After the whole operation, the engineer told me that they don't return card. Oboy I told him what the swallowed card had caused me. He saw how angry and disappointed I looked.

He looked at me and said, you made some trouble with the other sets of police officers who escorted us down here some times ago. I don't want no drama again. Take your card.

I collected the card issue a stern warning on the ATM machine.

Some ATM machine can be nasty.

It's a regulatory(CBN) order. The reason is that a destroyed card cannot be used to perpetrate fraud. Its a very serious offence if there's a fraud on that retracted card cos it was not destroyed. The banker who released the card without destroying is liable to go to jail.

If you're familiar with zenith Bank in Oau Ife....not only does it swallow cards the buttons will shock you as well....mehn there was one day I noticed one was free ( just one girl there using pencil to operate it) and the other was filled with people looking so angry unknown to me they had all received their own shock na so mumu me rush go the free one soon as the girl finished I put my card and touched the button with my sweaty palm and boom!!! My phone my files everything fly go different direction everybody just start to dey laff... access bank own was even worse sometimes na only half screen dey show.....I have so many crazy experiences with ATMs I can tell you the most useless ATMs are in Lagere
