Aston Villa were credited with an interest in signing Borussia Dortmund and Belgium international midfielder Axel Witsel during the summer transfer window.

The 32-year-old was said to be interesting Villa who are claimed to be ‘active’ in pursuing Witsel's signature before last month's transfer deadline.

The midfielder has had a glittering career with Borussia, Zenit, Benfica and Standard Liege and was also said to be drawing the attention of Serie A giants Juventus and Roma.

Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has however suggested that the Villa-linked midfielder could sign a new contract at the Bundesliga giants at the end of the season.
