Layers Vs Broiler; Which is Best?
Marketing and market availability: to avoid unnecessary loss, you must have a way of selling off your broilers within 6 weeks since they must have matured by then.

They will continue to feed and be treated if not sold off within 6-8 weeks thereby incurring a loss of resources for you since they must survive.
Besides, your buyer will not pay you any extra money for keeping them for more than expected.
For a fact, most buyers don’t care about how long they have stayed on your farm; they just care about how heavy and affordable your birds are.

To mitigate against this, you should have a refrigerator where you will freeze the slaughtered broilers (chicken – meat) when they are not sold off as at when due.

This will help you to still sell them off and create a new profit center for your poultry farm business.

Layers do not require instant sellouts as they last longer in your farm before even laying eggs.

Once they start breeding, the eggs can be preserved at room temperature for up to a month.
However, the downside for layers is the perceived market price for eggs in your area. It is very unlikely that people will pay more money to you just because your eggs are bigger.

To make this choice you must consider if you have enough market for either chicken (meat) or the eggs and at what prices they sell.

Startup cost: starting a broiler farm requires that you start with as low as 50 birds. This makes broilers way cheaper to start than the layers since all you need is the farm structure, water, feed, vaccines, and a few hardware like the feeders, drinkers, light, and probably heating.

Starting a layers farm would need at least 100-200 birds and requires all the things a broiler would need as well but in a larger, longer period.
Layers spend up to 18-21 weeks on your farm before they start laying eggs and can remain on your farm for over a year.

This will make you spend more on them and increases the startup cost before profits start coming in.
Your Farm Management Skill: since layers will spend more time on your farm, it requires that you have stronger farm management skills that help you to easily spot unwell birds and isolate them for observation and treatment.

If you do not have strong management skills, you would then need the [paid] services of a professional.
Broilers are not that tricky to manage and can be handled by a complete amateur. All you need is to stumble through 6 weeks and gain experience as you grow with the farm.

Their mortality rate is yet another factor because broilers die less than the layers. They die less because you sell them off in a short while and regain profit.
