The only thing that makes these natural happenings disastrous is that the world population has far exceeded and grown with people residing in the path of natural weather phenomenon, hence making them appear perilous.

Volcanoes are meant to erupt at specific points in the existence of the mountains due to constant chemical activities going on within their core. They are not meant to remain stable forever.
