Pat Utomi, a political economist and former presidential candidate, has stated that securing more loans would not solve Nigeria’s problems, especially the budget deficit.

He made this known in reaction to the federal government’s commitment to borrow more funds to finance the N16.45tn 2022 budget.

What the Prof is saying is quite clear. Less than 20m Nigerians pay taxes. Get at least 150m Nigerians paying PAYE taxes. Put all goods and services on VAT.

When government implements these measures, Nigerians as usual would put their mouths up and start wailing like banshees.

It does not matter. Buhari's and governments after him should keep borrowing to do National critical infrastructure. Nothing should stop these projects.

Higher levels of taxation should repay the loans.
