The Benin Kingdom was in existence long before the British came to the shores of Nigeria. Studies show that the kingdom was in existence as far back as the 11th century. The empire came to being by the effort of the indigenous Edo-speaking people. However, invaders from Sudan came down to West Africa to also settle down in Benin. These invaders got married to the indigenous women and established their bases here. At inception, the kingdom was made up of hunters, agriculturists, and traders.
