EFCC may declare fleeing ex-govs wanted •May detain Bankole today

NIGERIAN Truibune has been reliably informed that some former state governors who are reportedly on the run from corruption probe might be declared wanted this week by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The whereabouts of three of them has been a subject of intense debate in the last 48 hours.

They were absent from the inauguration of their successors-in-office, with one of them reportedly handing over before the inauguration day.

Meanwhile, a source in the EFCC told the Nigerian Tribune that the embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Dimeji Bankole, might be detained over the alleged N10 billion scam rocking the chamber’s leadership as he prepares to appear before the commission today.

He begged the commission, last week, to fix a new interrogation date for him, with the commission fixing 11.00 a.m. today for his apperance for questioning.

It was gathered that his travel documents would be impounded if he would be released on administrative bail.

The phone of the spokesman of the EFCC, Mr Femi Babafemi, was switched off when the Nigerian Tribune tried to reach him to ascertain if the arrangement for Bankole’s appearance was still as planned.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), is also probing him on the same issue, based on a petition brought against him by SERAP.

Spokesperson of the commission, Mr Folu Olamiti, confirmed that the petition was receiving attention.

N1Obn scam: Bankole shuns EFCC invitation .
Tuesday, 31 May 2011 19:55 ISAAC AREGBESOLA, ABUJA

Dimeji Bankole, the embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives, failed to honour the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) invitation over allegations that he diverted funds meant for the National Assembly for his personal use.

Bankole was expected to face a team of investigators from the EFCC over his alleged involvement in the N10billion unauthorised loan and alleged and N2.3billion scam that had rocked the House during his tenure.

Tuesday was the second time in one week that Bankole would shun the invitation of the EFCC to appear before the agency over the allegations against him which have kept the nation glued riveted.

Last week, Bankole pleaded with the EFCC to fix a new date for his interrogation. He claimed that he was tied down with "Inauguration activities".

It was however reliably gathered that the anti-graft agency may be forced to move against the outgoing speaker when his tenure expires on June 6.

It would be recalled that the Speaker had last Thursday failed to appear before the commission’s operatives investigating the matter, citing his involvement in the swearing-in ceremonies of President Goodluck Jonathan as an excuse

Nigeria is too backwards. Why wait till their tenure is over to persecute them? Did they steal on the last day of the tenure or did we let criminals lead us because of immunity?

I can't agree with you more. Our appoach is always the most primitive and strange. But lets not forget that the country was designed to perpetually serve the benefits of ex-generals, it will take some time to straighten these things out. Its bloody shameful, IMHO the only person with immunity should be the President, thats the way it is in the developed democracies.

It would be asinine for the EFCC to use the immunity excuse for their unwillingness to do the right thing in this case, legislators do not enjoy immunity. If there is a case against Bankole,he should be arrestes and prosecuted.
