Ogun Assembly nullifies sale of Gateway Hotels

THE Ogun House of Assembly yesterday nullified the concessioning of the three state-owned Gateway Hotels by former Governor gbenga Daniel.

It also reversed Daniel’s return of 29 public secondary schools to missionaries and communities about a year ago.

Speaker Tunji Egbetokun said the process that led to the concession of the Gateway Hotels in Ijebu–Ode, Ota and Abeokuta was “fraudulent, against the laws of Ogun State and inconsistent with the government and public interest”.

The reversal, the Assembly said, took immediate effect.

Job Akintan, representing Yewa North 1, moved the motion for House Resolution 250, which sought the reversal of the concession of the hotels, arguing that “Daniel had deceived the people of Ogun State” in the manner the deal was sealed.

Deputy Speaker Remmy Hassan, who supported the motion, said it was unthinkable that the hotels, valued at over N1.2billion, could be given away to the concessionaires at barely half a billion naira.

The Assembly approved the renaming of the newly constructed N1.5bilion Ogun State Property Investment Company (OPIC) building in Abeokuta Central Business District (ACBD) as OPIC Towers.

The 12-storey building was named OGD Plaza few hours after it was commissioned by Daniel.

Egbetokun said the Ibikunle Amosun administration would be law-abiding, adding that reverting the Gateway Television and Gateway Radio to their old names should not be with immediate effect but until their enabling bill is either repealed or amended by the Assembly.

The House also resolved to confer its honorary memberon six Ogun indigenes – including Prof. Sheriffdeen Tella, former Vice-Chancellor, Crescent University, Abeokuta; and G-15 Legal Adviser, Mr Abraham Adeoye, whom it said stood behind it in its struggle against the many illegalities of the executive arm of the government.

Amosun has approved the dissolution of the boards and governing councils of state-owned parastatals and higher institutions.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant Funmi Wakama, the governor directed the chairmen and heads of the parastatals and institutions to hand over to the most senior civil servants in their establishments.

Amosun yesterday swore in the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Taiwo Abiodun Adeoluwa.

The governor, who described Adeoluwa as a silent achiever, urged him to dedicate himself to the service of the state, noting that the issue is neither about the SSG nor Amosun, but the development of the people.

I am just loving it, the way the assembly is working in consonance with the ideas of the government for the betterment of Ogun people

The Governor should please look into the case of over 1,000 staff illegally sacked at Olabisi Onabanjo University by Gbenga Daniel. They should all be recalled or be given option of voluntary retirement so that their effort at building the University would not be in vain.

Amosun is definately being misled. Privatisation is actually the order of governace. For your informationm the 3 hotels were not making profit after over 20years of its existence. They were rather going to Ogun government for funding every year.
After the hotels were privatised (not sold) as being alleged, the fortune has been turned around in the last one year. It should also be noted that Ogun Govt is still holding a certain share .
Egbetokun is misleading mr amosun. i pray he does not regret this.

ogun people are waiting for real actio not personal vandata. tongue wink

^-- Amazing that the hotels were not making profit. Definitely should be privatized. . . but auctioned off cleanly and transparently.

The point is transparency is as defined by the lawmakers. It is the way they feel and not necessarily because the process was not transparent in actual fact. It is devoid of logic and more of a political vendetta against OGD. Pure and simple.

Mind what you believe!

BTW, when will the new assembly resume sitting. I guess there will still a lot more reversals and nullifications.

What is exactly your point ? Gbenga privatized the whole state;left a debt profile of about 50 billion and you are still praising his privatization policy ?

On the bolded, where did you get that figure from? From politicians? I know that Amosun has not completed an audit of the state and that is if he has started.

Anyway, what the guy is saying is that renaming TV and Radio Stations, renaming OGD Plaza to OPIC Plaza and revoking the sale of Gateway Hotels all smirk of vendetta and defy any logical reasoning.

Or are you advancing your so called "N50b debt" as the justification?

On bolded, are you serious, ignorant or just playing N/L games? Mr. Daniel himself stated the figure. Do your search.

Vendetta, logical reasoning or whatever high fallutin word you may want to use to qualify the actions so far, I think the house acted in the best interest of the state. Mr. Daniel is the worst thing that ever happened to Ogun State. His penchant for fetishism was so well acknowledged that even Prof Soyinka re-named him, derogatorily, Dani Elebo. He destroyed the state, subjected the traditional institutions to ridicule, destroyed whatever fabric of love existed among the different peoples of the state etc.

Remaining on topic, vendetta or not, most of Mr. Daniels policies were self-serving, myopic and not in the best interset of the state.

Renaming an institutional facilty to bear its own name, from the acronyms of a politician is now vendetta? What logic? undecided Can they just arrest that buffo-on already?
Re: Ogun Assembly Nullifies Sale Of Gateway Hotels by PofP: 12:37pm On Jun 03, 2011
In as much that i understand OGD the not very much progress Ogun state, but reversal of policies is one of the main reasons why investors are always hessitant in investing in Nigeria.

When the said hotels were sold or privatised in the 1st instance did the lawmakers or anyone cry fowl-play?

I as a person would not be very interested in investing in a government/country were the concession might just be reversed by the next government in power!!!!

At the sametime government should concentrate on the business of governance and regulation and let the private sector do the business of "business".

Peace.

There is no other word to define his leadershiprulership than tyranny. An individual who knows what Democracy is all about will not try to muscle out the legistature and the demon was comfortable ruling the state without a legistative arm. Renaming institutions to bear his own name. The height of misrule.

I agree, he is the worst thing that happened to Ogun State.
Re: Ogun Assembly Nullifies Sale Of Gateway Hotels by infolpf: 1:34pm On Jun 03, 2011
Note that the hotels were concessioned, not sold. Big difference. In a concession deal, the State retains an equity interest, and therefore gets a share of profits or revenue (depending on the contract). The said market value of N1.2 is relevant, but CANNOT feasibly be the concession price. The concession price would generally be a small percentage of the market value.

IMHO, the original deal was more than fair. The concessionaires have taken on the risk of a dilapidated, badly managed, and non-profitable asset. They will take on the risk and cost of massive renovations and managing this asset. The leaders of this move at the Ogun State Assembly may be motivated by more than just "the development of the people".

Chasing shadows! Shows that Amosun doesnt even have any agenda for the state. Which name is better, OGBC radio/tv or GATEWAY radio/tv? Does the name make their services better or less in quality? We need continuity in governance in this nation. Amosun should sit down and think of how to take Ogun to a greater height instead of witch hunting

So what? Carry your disgust go elsewhere. Whatever it takes to reverse cosmetic changes, to restore people's self confidence, repevaluate indulgences must be supported. Yeah, much as we like to talk about the Fresh Air in Ogun State, some other states are still in bondage.

For me SIA ROCKS pls.

O of course how silly of me!! Its soo obvious how a hotel or two will bring about cosmetic revolutions to the state, reverse poverty, feed the hungry, treat the weak, truly eradicate the state of malaria and the other deadly parasites it harbours like a tropical jungle and finally end corruption and improve the justice system. Doh! How could i not have realised that! *rolls eyes*

Why are people so blind to psychological impacts of reversal of negative policies? To you its a hotel or two, to the people, its about the sale of collective patrimony, a legacy. You may want to forever want to be a cynic, good luck to you. it is stupid people like you that will canvass privatisation, only to sell govt corporations to yourself at ridiculously low prices.
